X4 Great Grandpa ~ Solomon Bayes

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2024: Week 39 (HOMESTEAD)

I decided to look for the homestead of my Bayes relatives in Campbellford, Ontario. 

According to the 1861 census my 4th great grandparents (with their 12 children were living at "Haldimand, Northumberland, Canada West".

Birth 26 NOV 1815 • Hunworth, Norfolk, , England
Death 25 OCT 1882 • Northumberland, , Ontario, Canada
and
Mary Ann Tuck
Birth 15 JAN 1823 • Sharrington, Norfolk, England
Death 28 JAN 1908 • Cramahe, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada

Their children on the census were: James, Martha, Solomon, William George, Edward, Emily, Adelaine, Deanah, Rebecca, and Celia. Mary Ann. Rufus, Georgina, and Henrietta were born after 1861.

I then began looking for where exactly they lived, but was not able to pinpoint an actual address.

The census notes they lived in a one story log house, and only their family lived in it. The 1861 census didn't ask if they owned or rented their home that I could find.

I looked at Library & Archives Canada, but was not able to find a land grant for them listed searching by:
- last name Bayes & Bays
- first name Solomon (with a variation of the last name)
- Haldimand Township (with a variation of the name)

I then looked at follow-up census, and was still not able to identify exactly where.

BUT ....

all was not lost

I decided to search for the history of Campbellford, and discovered the local library's archives and historical socities.

I now have many digital sources to look further for my family history.

Learning more about my Bayes ancestors.

Spring Flower ~ Rose Honor Dendy

A Rose by any other name 

I always think about my great grandmother Rose Honor (nee Dendy) Bayes when I hear the name Rose. I often think about her when looking at or smelling roses. She died when I was young leaving me curious about who she was. I remember visiting her, but can't remember a lot about her. I do remember she gave great hugs. 

Strangely enough when I think about Great Grandma Rose I think about haircuts. While mom was gone for her grandmother's funeral I told dad he had to trim my bangs for school photo day. When he said he didn't think he could I told him he had to because mom ALWAYS did. Wanting to avoid a potential temper tantrum he did as I asked.

When mom got home she was very upset, but she completely lost it when the photos were delivered. 

Now back to Great Grandma Rose.

Great Grandma was born on April 14th 1906 in the Rural Municipality of Pipestone, Manitoba, Canada.

Rose Honor Dendy was the first child born to recent immigrants from England.

Amy Louisa Baker
BIRTH 18 MAR 1875 • Ealing, Middlesex, England
DEATH 23 DEC 1949 • Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

They arrived in 1903 according to the census records from 1916 & 1921. I have been unable to find any documents besides these 2 census records confirming that date.

Great Grandma Rose is listed in both censuses. They were living in Calgary. How they got from Manitoba to Calgary is not known to me.

How she got from Calgary back to Manitoba where she met Great Grandpa Ernie is a tale I do not know.

On July 24th 1925 she married Ernest Elmer Bayes in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Almost 2 years later my grandmother was born, and almost 2 years later their second child, a son, was born. They would have no further children which was quite unusual for that time. 

By 1935 Rose & Ernie were residing at 597 Young Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba with Rose's mother & younger sister Edie. 

In 1948 Rose's mother had her 73rd birthday. I found this article from The Winnipeg Free Press,  Wednesday March 31 1948. The article says they are living at 493 Spence Street, Winnipeg.

We don't know when they moved to 493 Spence Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada (as recorded in the article & voter's list), but we do know they were living there with Rose's mother and their son, Fred. Sister Edith had gotten married in 1941.

By 1957 Rose & Ernie do not have either of their children living with them and mother Amy died in 1949. They are not living alone. They are living with 3 other people whose names I am not familiar with.

Through the moves over these years they appeared to stay in the same neighbourhood. The Winnipeg map shows these three residences were located fairly close to each other. 

BUT then something changed.

6 years later we find Rose & Ernie on the Voter's List living in the Cariboo region of British Columbia. I should know where they were living & why, but I can't recall this bit of information. In 1963 their daughter was living on Vancouver Island, and their son was living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I think Ernie's sister was living in that area so I suspect that is what brought Rose & Ernie to the Cariboo region of British Columbia.

By 1972 Rose & Ernie were living in the Kiwanis Senior's Housing in cabin 210 at 824 6th Street, Nelson, British Columiba.. Rose & Ernie moved to live closer to their daughter & her family who were living in Nelson. They lived their until her death in 1974. 

After Rose's death widowed Ernie moved in with his daughter where he resided until his death in 1986.

In looking at the cause of death for Rose there is little doubt she had undiagnosed Hemochromatosis. She was not a drinker, and yet had Cirrhosis liver, portal hypertension, & esophageal varices - all of which could be caused by untreated Hemochromatosis. Knowing she was a non-drinker the odds of her cirrhosis being caused by anything else is low. We know that she carried the genes because the 'celtic curse' DNA continues to pass through her descendants.

CRAFT - Can't Remember A Fricken Thing

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 49 (CRAFT)


I said to my husband that this week's prompt was CRAFT, and he replied "Can't remember a fricken thing?"


I had been thinking about talents when I first saw the prompt. I was wondering who I would feature that had skills in the arts/crafts, or was a skilled tradesman, or maybe I had a brewmaster in my tree. 


With that comment - PLOT TWIST! 


Alzheimer's and Dementia runs in my family. There is nothing like humour to assist in coping with all things scary. This type of black humour is what gets me through the sense of panic when I think about all of the inheritable things lurking in my family tree.


CRAFT DISEASE - Can't Remember A Fricken Thing (Alzheimer's) is the one that scares me the most. 


When I first began genealogy researching I had thought about finding the people in my family tree. I hadn't thought about how many inheritable diseases I would see on medical and death records.


I have not done a medical DNA test. I have only done the Ancestry shared matches DNA. I don't want to know what lurks in my genetic code. Just because the marker is there doesn't mean I will get it. Knowing in advance won't change the outcome.


When I was a teenager my great grandfather began behaving a bit strange. It wasn't very obvious at first, and he was very good at covering things up. As the years went by it became worse. In my early 20s I stopped by his care home twice a week to visit. When I arrived he knew I belonged to him somehow because I was there so frequently, but he didn't know who I was. 


One time I took him down a floor for an event happening. He was a bit agitated going into the elevator since he rarely left his floor. When we arrived downstairs there was a large crowd, but soon he settled into enjoying the music. He asked me who I was. I told him that I was his granddaughter Debbie. He replied that I was lying because Debbie was only this tall as he held his hand about 2 1/2 feet off the floor. I continued to try to convince him I had grown up. He got upset, asked me what exactly I wanted from him, and then tried to punch me. I managed to settle him down, and take him back upstairs. 


After that I always told him my name was Deb, and that I was a family friend. He accepted that.  



Ernest Elmer Bayes was nicknamed Hap because of how happy he was during childhood straight through to adulthood. He was an amazing Great Grandpa through my childhood. My mom told me wonderful stories about her experience growing up with him as her grandfather. Grandma told fantastic stories about what an amazing dad he was while she and her brother were growing up.

The day before he died I stopped to see him in hospital. He knew exactly who I was. The gift of clarity for that one day before his death was priceless.

J.P. Morgan ~ My Cousin's International Banking Is Too Confusing

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 45 (RICH MAN)


When I was growing up I was often heard saying that my real parents were searching for me, and they were rich. It was a joke. I never believed I was related to anyone who was rich. 


To be honest I don't think I would have liked living a rich lifestyle. I am a fairly simple person. I don't often want things. It's only when I do decide I want something that I realize I have expensive tastes. Likely that is why, while growing up I, often thought I was a rich person trapped in a poor person's life. As an adult my husband and I are comfortable. We have enough for extras which is nice since the essentials take care of themselves. 


This week's RICH MAN prompt got me thinking maybe my relatives really were rich even if they were never actually looking for me.


Searching through FAMOUSKIN.COM I found that I am the 8th cousin 3X removed of the very wealthy John Pierpont (J.P.) Morgan.  


Using my *how are you related chart* I discovered that 8th cousins are too distant to be included. After entering J.P. Morgan's details into my family tree I confirmed that my 10th great grandparents are his 7th great grandparents. We are 3 generations apart (10th and 7th) hence 3X removed, and they are his 7th great grandparents hence 8th cousins.

that I am related to Princess Diana and other prominent folks.

John Pierpont Morgan was my great grandfather's 8th cousin. They shared the same 7th great grandparents. Grampsy through his dad, and JP through his mom.

I realized that I did recognize the name JP Morgan as a wealthy man, but knew nothing about him as a person or his career. Since he's my cousin I decided I should know a little about him.

and
Juliet Pierpont

He had 2 sisters and a brother.

In 1861 he married his first wife. Amelia (Mimi) Sturges

She passed away a year later at the age of 26.

They had 3 daughters and a son.


In researching the career of JP Morgan I realized that I have no understanding of international banking. This portion of the blog is finished.


When he died some of his art collection was donated to The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Wadsworth Atheneum.   He was a philanthropist who supported many charities in his lifetime. 


BUT maybe he doesn't fit for my RICH MAN prompt according to John D. Rockefeller's opinion:
"When he died in 1913 at the age of 75, it was revealed that he was worth around $80 million — according to legend, John D. Rockefeller remarked, "And to think he wasn't even a rich man!" upon reading the figure, according to Jean Strouse's article for the New York Times." {1}
