This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.

Leaving the Old & Embracing the New ~ Canada Bound

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 30 (THE OLD COUNTRY)

This week's prompt THE OLD COUNTRY had be searching through my tree on my mother's paternal line looking for how far back in the old country I had gotten in my research. I found the line below that I have been stuck for many years.

I decided to blog as cousin bait.
It worked last time.
I hope it will again!

My 5th great grandmother Marion Weir. I have quite a bit of confirmed information, and DNA matches to support my research this far.

Marion Weir (my 5th great grandmother)
BIRTH 14 JUL 1781 • Lesmahagow, Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH 17 AUG 1826 • Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland

John Weir
BIRTH ABT. 1755 • Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH Scotland
and
Anne Stark
BIRTH ABT. 1757 • Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH Scotland

This is where I am stuck on this family line. I have tugged on ancestry, but with such common names of the time I am not confident the records or trees are for the correct person.
I only have 4 other children besides Marion

Marion Weir married
Andrew Hamilton (my 5th great grandfather)
BIRTH 2 SEP 1775 • Baddom, Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH 28 JAN 1836/37 • Goathouse, Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland

and
Robert Graham
BIRTH 16 JAN 1814 • Thornhill, Closeburn, Dumfries-shire, Scotland

Skipping a few generations forward - it's Marion and Andrew's great grandchild, Robert Graham) who brought my family line to Canada.

Newsworthy - Found in a Gossip Mag

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 29 (NEWSWORTHY)

Have you even googled your own last name?  Have you ever narrowed it down to NEWS only?  Well that is what I did for this week's blog Newsworthy.

I planned to write about a known relative who had a news article written about them. I thought about using one that I already have since I collected quite a few with the not so long ago free access to Newspapers.com

BUT then I found this article, and even though we don't know how she's related - there is no doubt she is because all the Buchners are.

source cited below
Mrs. Buchner along with Lugosi and Spider have never been happier.

The article seems to fit nicely under the gossip rag type.  The headline screams read me in the grocery store line up. As I stand in the line at the grocery store looking at those headlines I think those people and their families shop too - how awful is that. It seems no family is excluded.

Are you wondering why I decided to write about this article?  Why I decided to link the article in my sources below thereby potentially increasing traffic?

When I first started my blog I added this intro to the top

"This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.
You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family you know!"

If this find doesn't embody my initial intention I have no idea what would.

Twins ~ Clara & Lena Pellack

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 28 (MULTIPLE)

I have always been fascinated by multiple births. When I was young I had friends who were mirror twins. One was left handed, and the other right handed. One had her hair parted on the right, and the other parted on the left. They had the cutest cheek dimples - one on the left and the other on the right. I don't know if they found it creepy that I was fascinated by their appearance &  how they moved that I stared intently at them while we played. On the playground watching them doubles skip perfectly synchronized I wished my future children would be twins or triplets or quadruplets of quintuplets....they would be so darn cute.

I was a smidge disappointed when our first child arrived as a single. My disappointment changed to gratitude when he developed colic. I have always been blessed to receive what I need - not necessarily what I want. I can't imagine looking after 2, 3 or more colicky babies at once.

I found 6 sets of twins in our Bramble Bush. No triplets or quadruplets, or quintuplets.....

I am pretty sure I have added more multiple births in my tree, but I just can't find them. It's only been recently that I have begun identifying multiples with a suffix (ie twin 1, twin 2) in family tree entries which allows for easy searching.

The twins I write about for this blog are my great aunts:
Clara and Lena Pellack.
They were born about 1914 as evidenced by this census record:

1916 Canadian Prairie Census, source: Library and Archives Canada
clickable link to the full document in sources below

Family members listed are Alexander, Marry, Harry, Stephania (Esther), Max (my grandfather), John, Annie, Lena, Clara.

The twins were not in the 1921 census:
1921 Canadian Census, source: Library and Archives Canada

Family members listed are Alex, Mary, Harry, Esther (Stephania), Max (my grandfather), John, Mike.

Something happened to the twins (Lena & Clara) between 1916 and 1921.

I wondered if they had died in the Spanish Influenza Epidemic 1918-1919.

I wondered if they were buried on the homestead.

I found no record of their birth, but none of the children born on the homestead had their births registered. Mike and John appear to have registered their own births as adults.

The lack of birth registration made if fairly easy for my grandfather to recreate himself as an entirely different person.

A cousin theorizes Clara and Lena were not the children of Alexander and Mary - that they may have been neighbour children who happened to be there on the day the census was taken.

They are listed as daughters, but the census records have been known to be wrong. Take a closer look at Max in the 1921 record above - my grandfather is listed as female and a daughter.

If I ever get a chance to walk the old homestead I would keep my eyes down searching for a spot where my two great aunts might be buried.

Remembering this set of multiples who I believe are my aunts.

Clara Pelleck

BIRTH ABT. 1914 • homestead, SW, Section: 1, Township: 48, Range: 17, Meridian: W2, Gronlid, Saskatchewan, Canada
DEATH BEF 1921 • Not in 1921 census with family, but there for the 1916 census

Lena Pellack
BIRTH ABT. 1914 • homestead, SW, Section: 1, Township: 48, Range: 17, Meridian: W2, Gronlid, Saskatchewan, Canada
DEATH BEF 1921 • Not in 1921 census with family, but there for the 1916 census.

Remembering those who left their mark on the generations to come even when passing too young to leave a mark on the world!

My 10th Cousin ~ Janis Joplin

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 27 (SOLO)

I have always had a very eclectic taste in music. If anyone looks at the music on my mobile they are surprised to find traditional children's songs, christian, country, rap, rock, and other random genres all on the same playlist. I don't have a particular genre I like - it's about the message and groov-ability for me.

I remember the last vinyl record I bought was Out of the Cellar by Ratt -- a heavy metal band. I was in highschool. Not too long after that I decided I would join the world of cassette tapes. The first cassette tape I bought was Like a Virgin by Madonna. It was around that time that I argued with anyone who appeared even remotely interested that Cyndi Lauper would be around way longer than Madonna. It seems I didn't understand the power of Madonna.

Janis Joplin was a favourite of mine throughout middle & high school. In typical teenage fashion I would play Piece Of My Heart over and over again seemingly never tiring of it.  No portable music with headphones in those days. If I listened so did everyone in my vicinity. Later I got my first walkman, and then my parents complained that I was wrecking my hearing. Maybe the irritation of my family was only a small bonus.

When I took my first taste of Southern Comfort I thought about her amazing voice. I once heard it said that her voice was found at the bottom of a SoCo bottle. Janis Joplin was known as a solo artist even though she frequently included the name of the band that backed her up in her marketing.

I loved Janis Joplin, and thought her death a tragedy for the music world.

My youngest son tells me "She was apparently incredibly nice! Really good to her staff and fans".  I think the best compliment is that you are interesting. I couldn't help but notice how interesting Janis was when I watched videos of her concerts and interviews. She continues to build a fan base, and it seems many of her fans are not even born yet.

I was an adult when I learned that Janis and I are family.

She is my 10th cousin.
Her 9th great grandparents are my 9th great grandparents.
Our connection is via our mothers.

our common ancestors are:

John Marsh
BIRTH 15 APR 1618 • Braintree, Essex, England
DEATH 28 SEP 1688 • Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, United States
and
Anne Webster
BIRTH 29 JUL 1621 • Cossington, Leicestershire, England
DEATH 9 JUN 1662 • Hadley, Hampshire, Massachusetts

Janis through their son:

Samuel Marsh
BIRTH ABT 1645 • prob.Hartford, Connecticut, USA
DEATH 7 SEP 1728

and I through their son:

Jonathan (John) Marsh
BIRTH 29 AUG 1643 • Hartford, Connecticut, USA
DEATH 1 JUL 1727 • Hartford, Connecticut, USA

I wondered if cousins, Janis & Jacki, shared any similar features:

Jacki-Roberta Graham, highschool
my mom
