This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.

The Sea Chase ~ Searching For Jack In A John Wayne Movie

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 39 (SHOULD BE A MOVIE)

Family tales begin with a nugget of information, and then the search is on.

Hey Family
- cousin Doug shared that grandpa Jack Graham was in a movie.....

He says:
"It was only a small part near the end of the film, but John Wayne was a Captain of a British/Canadian? destroyer, and it sank a German Cargo boat, and as the survivors climbed on board the destroyer, Jackie was one of the guards."
"Doug says - near the end of the film, Jackie is standing with a gun as the survivors climb on board.... he says it was black and white."

I wasn't surprised to hear that Grandpa Jack has been in a movie. I had heard the stories about Jack through the years, and saw the photos. Jack was a confident attractive guy. On that set he would have made a gorgeous sailor any director would have wanted in his movie.

With the details from cousin Doug I began searching for a John Wayne movie that fit the description. I found THE SEA CHASE. As usually happens with family lore there were a few details amiss, but not terribly different. It was surprisingly easy to find the movie. What wasn't easy was trying to find a venue to watch the movie. In the end Amazon provided.

The replies I received to the message I sent at the top helped fill in a few details.

"I know that he was in a movie. Gram was an usher at the theater in Victoria. Every time his scene  would be coming up they would run and get gram to come in and see him on screen."

"I'm pretty sure Dad was in his uniform with other soldiers on the deck of the ship while something was happening with John Wayne and the other stars."

"Dad was in a John Wayne movie. Mom took us to see it when we were very little. She said we were watching and then all of us were yelling Daddy when his face appeared"

Jack's three little girls about the time the movie was released

Jack with his wife, three little girls and mother
(about the time THE SEA CHASE was released)

"mom dressed us all up and marched us down to the theatre so we could see him."

An example of how they were dressed up alike - a few years later

Going back to cousin Doug's description I watched the movie waiting until a scene fit.
I was delighted when the described scene appeare
d:

As the scene came to an end I wondered how those little girls even recognized him since neither guard turned around. Thankfully I was watching with my husband who said "I don't think that's the right scene. It sounded like his face was on the screen." We continued to watch the movie.

At the end I had no idea if I had just seen my grandfather in THE SEA CHASE. All I knew was that grandpa Jack was tall, dark haired, and thin.

It reminded me of the year I lived in Vancouver when I stared at every bus driver to try to figure out if it was my grandfather.

I never knew if my grandfather was the driver of the bus I rode on or if I had seen him in the movie I just watched.

The legacy of a fractured family tree with broken branches.

A few days after watching THE SEA CHASE my father came over for dinner. He had known Jack, and offered to help me figure out where Jack was in the movie.

Dad wondered if that was Jack in the background of the photo below.

Could that be Grandpa Jack behind?

Thinking back to the reply I had about Jack being in uniform I wondered if Dad was right. I compared the sailor in the scene above  with the photos I have of Jack from about the same time.

Definitely a maybe.

When I sent the screenshot to my mom's sisters it remained a maybe.

After looking at the stills of the scenes with actors in the background in the photos below we still aren't sure where Jack can be found in THE SEA CHASE.

Do I know which was Grandpa Jack in this film? No.
Do I know I have the right film? Yes.

Me & My Sassanach ~ Scottish & English Roots

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 38 (ON THE MAP)

I am a fan of Outlander.
I have read all the books, and watched all the television episodes.

I always felt the story spoke to me because of my Scottish heritage.
I can claim Clan Graham on my mom's side & Clan MacTavish on my dad's.

It's also possible my growing up in a town with a strong 'hippy' culture
helped with my belief in the magic of the standing stones,
OR as I like to call them, the fairy circles.

My great grandfather Thomas Thomson
with his bagpipes

I  love the bagpipes.
Whenever I hear them I feel like my heritage is calling me.

Now back to Claire & Jamie's story!

Outlander is a story of love:
across time,
over battles,
forever
and
always
It's a tale of Jamie Fraser and his Sassanach!

The trials and tribulations they experienced throughout their lives is mirrored in the tale of my husband and I.

Claire and Jamie are involved in many battles where they team together to win against all odds, but their beginning battles were not successful.
There was often ale involved in their successes and failures.

My husband and I were also involved in battle the first night we met. We met in a nightclub where we teamed up to race tricycles. That first week of races we lost because ale guzzling was not a skill my husband had which slowed us down. The following week he redeemed himself, and we were the reigning champions for a few weeks before moving on to other battles.

One of them is Scottish (Jamie), and one is English (Claire).

In our relationship:
one of us is Scottish (me) and one of us is English (him).
Jamie calls Claire his Sassanach.
May I introduce my Sassanach.

This is where the similarities between us and them ends.

In considering who to write about for this week's ON THE MAP I was intrigued to find that my husband and I each had one family line that seemed to have stayed put. I think this is the only line in my entire half of the Bramble Bush that had done so. My Slicer/Black line was in the North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland area back to at least the 1600s. My husband's Woolfenden line was in the Rochdale, Lancashire, England area to at least the 1600s.

Even though these two families were separated by only 240 miles they were far greater apart. The Scottish English divide of the day would have resulted in us never getting close enough to meet.

Then again my research indicates that my Scottish ancestors may have supported the English so maybe we would have met at a grand ball where there was games and ale - sort of like our actual meeting!

Or maybe we would have rejected our family's expectations because we both have a lot of counter-will and would have still met.

Part of the English & Scottish ancestors
that make this BRAMBLE BUSH

On my husband's side his 5th great grandparents were:
Thomas Woolfenden
BIRTH ABT 1766 • Rochdale, Lancashire, England
DEATH 1814 • Rochdale, Lancashire, England
&
Martha (Matty) Holt
BIRTH Unknown
DEATH 1802 • Rochdale, Lancashire, England

Thomas was the son of:
William Woolfenden
BIRTH 1732 • Rochdale, Lancashire, England
DEATH 1792 • Rochdale, Lancashire, England
&
Ann Whitaker
BIRTH NOV 1741 • Rochdale, Lancashire, England
DEATH FEB 1803 • Rochdale, Lancashire, England

My 5th great grandparents were:
George Black
BIRTH 6 DEC 1754 • North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland
DEATH 7 OCT 1828 • North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland
&
Alison (Allison) Kilgower (Kilgour)
BIRTH 7 JULY 1755 • North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland
DEATH 14 SEP 1834 • North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland

George was the son of
George Black
BIRTH 9 NOV 1729 • Dirleton, East Lothian, Scotland
DEATH ABT 1785 • East Lothian, Scotland
&
Suffia (Sophia) Fleming

Not Just the President ~ Taft Family Legacies

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 37
(BACK TO SCHOOL)

When I first started researching my family history I did so because I didn't exactly know where I fit in my own story. I have a lot of black sheep in my direct line.

I soon found that my husband's family line was very easy to research because of solid records. His lines had continuity and many famous folks.

I kept finding recognizable relatives all over his tree while only finding Smellies and Belchums in mine.

It seemed every time I searched on his line I found someone more impressive than the last. I was delighted to see my sons had great genes, but I wanted some of them to be from me.

A little over 4 years ago, and still a few years away from finding my genealogy jackpot line, I posted this to Facebook:

William Howard Taft descends through Katherine King's brother John King and wife Elizabeth Goldthwaite.  My husband is his 7th cousin 5x removed.

William Howard Taft is the son of:
Louisa Maria Torrey
BIRTH 11 SEP 1827 • Boston, Massachusetts, USA
DEATH 8 DEC 1907 • Millbury, Massachusetts, USA
& husband
Alphonso Taft
BIRTH 5 NOV 1810 • Townshend, Vermont, USA
DEATH 21 MAY 1891 • San Diego,  California, USA

Quoting my senior neighbour "get to point!"

Louisa & Alphonso's younger son was:
Horace Dutton Taft
BIRTH 28 DEC 1861 • Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
DEATH 28 JAN 1943 • Watertown, Connecticut, USA

It seems Horace may have been just as successful as his President brother.

Horace Taft founded the Taft School. It's origins began with only 17 students in a very small school in Pelham Manor, Westchester County, New York, USA. The school now stands on 226 acres in Watertwon, Conneticut, USA. There are 600 students who either board or are day students. They are taught by 129 teachers. The teacher/student ratio is 1:5 with classes averaging 11 students.

Along side Horace was his wife
Winifred Shepard (Winnie) Thompson
BIRTH 8 JUN 1860
DEATH 16 DEC 1909

She was a teacher, managed the school finances, and planned the school's building growth.

With small class sizes it appears as though the Taft School will have no trouble mastering covid-19 safety distancing for their Tafties.

Labour Day ~ Back To School

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 36 (LABOUR)

In Canada Labour Day is officially the end of summer.
It's the last long weekend before school starts on Tuesday.

In the photo below you can see my grandma Mary Elizabeth Thomson (on the left) with her father (Thomas Thomson) and sister Marion Isabella (Maisie) Thomson.

Maybe this was a first day of school photo.

Here they are not too long later, and again it might be a first day of classes photo for elementary school in Calgary, Alberta .

Grandma went to Sunnyside School in Calgary, Alberta, Canada for her elementary years.

Maybe this was Grandma's first day of classes during middle school in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Grandma went to Hillhurst for middle school - in Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Here we find grandma enjoying the sun in Calgary, Alberta.
Maybe it was the Labour Day weekend. Maybe she was enjoying the last "dog days of summer" before she had to go back to classes.

Grandma attended Crescent Heights in Calgary, Alberta, Canada for her high school years.

When I look at the photo of grandma enjoying the sun I see a beautiful young women with her whole future in front of her. By the time I knew grandma she was just my grandma.

When I look at the pictures of when she was young it's pretty clear that Grandma was way cooler before she became a mother and grandmother.
