This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.

Catherine (Kate) Cameron Power ~ When The Paper Trail Disappears

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2025: Week 39 (DISAPPEARED)

Chris' great grandparents are buried in Cultus Cemetery in Houghton Township, Ontario, Canada.

They are buried alongside many of Chris' relatives.

The reason I am writing about them is because great grandma Kate disappears in all records prior to getting on the ship to come to Canada on August 19th 1911.

She departed from Glasgow, and arrived in Quebec Canada on August 26th 1911.

She arrived as part of the Buchanan Party as a domestic to Canada.

I have been unable to find any records from Scotland.

She claimed to be born in Tain, Rosshire, Scotland.

She claimed to be Catherine Cameron Power.

She claimed her parents were Donald Power & Margaret Connor on her marriage registration.

DNA matches on 23&Me and Ancestry suggest she may have been related to the Ross family.

The matches were close enough that I got to wondering whether her maiden name was Ross OR maybe her mother's maiden name was Ross.

None of the documents found in Canada record either of them with Ross as a maiden name.

Adding to the Ross thought process was one of her sons had the middle name Ross, and spent his life being called Ross.

In searching this possible connections I found a match's family tree with Donald Power married to Margaret MacIntosh with the youngest of 6 children named Catherine born 2 years before our Catherine's noted birthdate.

The DNA in common with this match supports the theory.

Then again - all the names are very common so none of this actually proved anything.

Thircul & Kate Aspden

At this point we are no further ahead in the search for exactly who great grandma Kate was and exactly where she came from!!!

This is why I search -

Twinsies ~ Ann (nee Smith) Franklin & Myself

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2025: Week 29 (COUSINS)

According to Family Search Ann Franklin & I share 51% of our looks.

Check out the photo below provided by Family Search

We are 9th cousinx X6 removed via my maternal grandmother's paternal line (Bayes, Merrill).

"More than 200 years after her death, Ann Smith Franklin became the first woman inducted into the Journalism Hall of Fame at the University of Rhode Island. She is also remembered as the owner of the press on which Benjamin Franklin learned to set type." 1

We are also inlaws because Chris is related to her husband James Franklin via his mother's paternal line via marriage.

This mean Chris shares in common relatives with Benjamin Franlin, but a direct connection has not been found at this time.

We seem to be getting closer to be able to introduce ourselves as cousin!!!

Summer of 1980 ~ First Kiss, Mowing Lawns, & a Tornado

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2022: Week 39 (ROAD TRIP)

The prompt ROAD TRIP left me thinking about Google Maps street view.

I then started thinking about what time and place from my past I wanted to revisit.

I decided I would try to find the house I had lived in during the summer of 1980 in Dashwood, Ontario.

Walking the streets I am fairly confident this is the house we lived in

At first I thought the house was rebuilt since it had a dormer with balcony off the upper section when we lived there 42 years ago.

BUT then I noticed the imprinting where the balcony would have been when I zoomed in closer.

The pear tree in the front of the house is gone. My mother canned those pears, but first my brother and I had to collect them. I'm pretty sure it was me that climbed the tree & my brother that put them in the pail.

I also walked the street and found the Fire Hall in the next block.

I used to stand out on the balcony by my bedroom on the top floor watching the volunteer fire fighters run down the street from all directions when the bells began to ring.

I remember watching my dad's friend, Jim Rumball,  snapping his suspenders into place as he was running. They lived a few doors down the street. I babysit their 3 kids.

It's also where I had my first kiss.

I don't know if my parents or the Rumballs knew I had my boyfriend over while I was babysitting.

My clearest memory of that first kiss?  How strongly he smelled of Aqua Velva aftershave and his sweaty palms.

I wonder if he even remembers that kiss.

I also remember how big the lawn was. My brother and I took turns mowing that lawn. While one mowed the other sat on the picnic table with a timer. When I looked at the photo I realized the lawn wasn't as big as I remembered. I've mowed way bigger lawns over the years. This one likely stands out as it was the first time we were responsible for lawn mowing.

I walked up the street on the other side, and immediately flashed back to the summer Rec program I attended at the park.

That summer the summer rec staff person taught me how to flare my nostrils like a rabbit. I can't remember if she showed it to us like a party trick. The moment I saw it I knew it was a skill I needed. It took all summer, but to this day I can flare my nostrils on demand.

I remember she was very friendly, fun, beautiful, and had an NFL football player boyfriend. He joined her one time that summer, and did trust exercises with us. All I remember about him was that he had dark curly hair, was fun, and very good looking.

The other summer rec memory I have was the trip to Boblo Island. We were loaded into various parent's vehicles for the 3 hour drive.

It was just my brother and I from our family, and we traveled in different vehicles. It was my first time being brave enough to go on the roller coaster. It might have been peer pressure or trying to look brave in front of the younger children - all I know is that was the first time I chose to conquer a fear. That roller coaster ride was fantastic.

By the time we came off the roller coaster the sky was dark. They began shutting down the bigger rides. People waiting in lines began yelling at the staff while their children were crying.

Then we heard the tornado siren.

The summer rec staff began gathering all the children to load them on to the ferry that took us to the island. We had walked on the ferry leaving the vehicles in the parking lot so it was quick to get all the kids off the island.

When we arrived to the parking lot it was remembered that one of the parents had dropped the kids & left. The plan had been to come back at the scheduled end time. In 1980 there was no cell phones. We were leaving the island earlier than expected. The summer staff explained to the three oldest, me & 2 boys, that we were going to stay behind to wait for the parent who would be there in at the expected departure time.

In looking back I should have been more afraid then I was. The 3 of us took cover under a large bush, and waited. It was rainy, the wind was howling, and it was dark. We stayed right there until the parent arrived. Complicating things further - we weren't the children she had dropped off. We didn't know her or her car & she didn't know us. I have no idea how long that was exactly, but it felt like hours.

When my brother arrived home my parents were relieved. They had heard about the Tornado warning, and were worried. When they realized my brother was alone they were confused. Their confusion turned to fear when he explained I was left behind in a parking lot with 2 boys while the tornado siren continued to blare. The response I got when I arrived home made me realize the situation had been scarier than I realized. Looking back on it now as an adult & parent I can't believe the decision was made. Then again - what other choice did they have given the parenting of the time and no way to contact anyone.

The entire summer rec program is reduced to these 2 people, my nostril flaring skills, and that field trip.

I know there were other staff & activities, but they didn't make any lasting impressions on me.

I also remember my bike ride home from the park, and was delighted to find this photo that is exactly as I remember

Looking back through your own memories!!!

Canada's 1st National Day for Truth and Reconciliation ~ Tiny Shoes on Steps

*** Trigger Warning ***

If you need support reach out to the 24 Hour Crisis Line Indian Residential School Survivors and Family: 1-866-925-4419 ************

My bestie is originally from Newfoundland.

She has been living in British Columbia for many years.

This year she was visiting family for Canada's 1st National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th 2021.

Mikwite’tm Garden, Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada

Along with the photo above she messaged  that it
"was very humbling and special to be apart of the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in my own indigenous community".

Qalipu women smudging ceremony

The event took place at the Mikwite’tm Garden, built by Qalipu First Nation in memory of missing and murdered indigenous women.  A more  powerful location for this first year of reflection couldn't be found.

Mikwite'tm Garden — the name translates to "I remember"

My bestie is from Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada. Her family has long been members of the Qalipu First Nation. Her family has lived in that area for many generations. There is little doubt her family of origin carries the legacy of residential school.

In May 2021 the unmarked graves of 215 children were found on the grounds of a former Residential School in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. The school operated from 1890 to 1969 as a residential school, and 1969 to 1978 as a day school.

Over the following few months more than 1300 lost children would be found in unmarked graves on the grounds of 4 Western Canada former Residential Schools.

Children who never got to go home.

Children who never got to grow up.

Children who could never find their way back to share in a Truth & Reconciliation ceremony in their own indigenous community as my bestie did.

The families and communities of these lost children are broken.

The legacy of the residential school stands today.

Before Reconciliation must come TRUTH!

On May 31st 2021 my husband and I visited the memorial on the steps of the courthouse in our community.

We both work in fields where we have learned about Residential Schools. We have both attended training sessions to understand the impact of colonialism on the populations we serve. We thought we understood what had happened when we headed to the memorial.
We thought we were prepared.

We each placed a pair of tiny shoes on the steps as symbols for the two boys we got to keep and raise. Two small pairs of shoes on the steps alongside all those shoes. Each pair representing a child.

Standing at this memorial with tears streaming down my face I realized I never understood & no matter how hard I try I will never begin to understand what happened or how it happened.

We stayed there rooted to the spot. Unsure how we could walk away leaving those children alone. The shoes standing vigil for the spirits of the children. After a very long time we slowly walked away while looking back at those shoes.

How could this have happened in the country we know as Canada?

"There may be reasons why they wouldn't record the deaths
properly and that they weren't treated with dignity and
respect because that was the whole purpose of the
residential school ... to take total control of Indian children,
to remove their culture, identity and connection to their family,"
 1  ~Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, Director of the
Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre

The Sea Chase ~ Searching For Jack In A John Wayne Movie

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 39 (SHOULD BE A MOVIE)

Family tales begin with a nugget of information, and then the search is on.

Hey Family
- cousin Doug shared that grandpa Jack Graham was in a movie.....

He says:
"It was only a small part near the end of the film, but John Wayne was a Captain of a British/Canadian? destroyer, and it sank a German Cargo boat, and as the survivors climbed on board the destroyer, Jackie was one of the guards."
"Doug says - near the end of the film, Jackie is standing with a gun as the survivors climb on board.... he says it was black and white."

I wasn't surprised to hear that Grandpa Jack has been in a movie. I had heard the stories about Jack through the years, and saw the photos. Jack was a confident attractive guy. On that set he would have made a gorgeous sailor any director would have wanted in his movie.

With the details from cousin Doug I began searching for a John Wayne movie that fit the description. I found THE SEA CHASE. As usually happens with family lore there were a few details amiss, but not terribly different. It was surprisingly easy to find the movie. What wasn't easy was trying to find a venue to watch the movie. In the end Amazon provided.

The replies I received to the message I sent at the top helped fill in a few details.

"I know that he was in a movie. Gram was an usher at the theater in Victoria. Every time his scene  would be coming up they would run and get gram to come in and see him on screen."

"I'm pretty sure Dad was in his uniform with other soldiers on the deck of the ship while something was happening with John Wayne and the other stars."

"Dad was in a John Wayne movie. Mom took us to see it when we were very little. She said we were watching and then all of us were yelling Daddy when his face appeared"

Jack's three little girls about the time the movie was released

Jack with his wife, three little girls and mother
(about the time THE SEA CHASE was released)

"mom dressed us all up and marched us down to the theatre so we could see him."

An example of how they were dressed up alike - a few years later

Going back to cousin Doug's description I watched the movie waiting until a scene fit.
I was delighted when the described scene appeare
d:

As the scene came to an end I wondered how those little girls even recognized him since neither guard turned around. Thankfully I was watching with my husband who said "I don't think that's the right scene. It sounded like his face was on the screen." We continued to watch the movie.

At the end I had no idea if I had just seen my grandfather in THE SEA CHASE. All I knew was that grandpa Jack was tall, dark haired, and thin.

It reminded me of the year I lived in Vancouver when I stared at every bus driver to try to figure out if it was my grandfather.

I never knew if my grandfather was the driver of the bus I rode on or if I had seen him in the movie I just watched.

The legacy of a fractured family tree with broken branches.

A few days after watching THE SEA CHASE my father came over for dinner. He had known Jack, and offered to help me figure out where Jack was in the movie.

Dad wondered if that was Jack in the background of the photo below.

Could that be Grandpa Jack behind?

Thinking back to the reply I had about Jack being in uniform I wondered if Dad was right. I compared the sailor in the scene above  with the photos I have of Jack from about the same time.

Definitely a maybe.

When I sent the screenshot to my mom's sisters it remained a maybe.

After looking at the stills of the scenes with actors in the background in the photos below we still aren't sure where Jack can be found in THE SEA CHASE.

Do I know which was Grandpa Jack in this film? No.
Do I know I have the right film? Yes.
