I have always had a very eclectic taste in music. If anyone looks at the music on my mobile they are surprised to find traditional children's songs, christian, country, rap, rock, and other random genres all on the same playlist. I don't have a particular genre I like - it's about the message and groov-ability for me.
I remember the last vinyl record I bought was Out of the Cellar by Ratt -- a heavy metal band. I was in highschool. Not too long after that I decided I would join the world of cassette tapes. The first cassette tape I bought was Like a Virgin by Madonna. It was around that time that I argued with anyone who appeared even remotely interested that Cyndi Lauper would be around way longer than Madonna. It seems I didn't understand the power of Madonna.
Janis Joplin was a favourite of mine throughout middle & high school. In typical teenage fashion I would play Piece Of My Heart over and over again seemingly never tiring of it. No portable music with headphones in those days. If I listened so did everyone in my vicinity. Later I got my first walkman, and then my parents complained that I was wrecking my hearing. Maybe the irritation of my family was only a small bonus.

When I took my first taste of Southern Comfort I thought about her amazing voice. I once heard it said that her voice was found at the bottom of a SoCo bottle. Janis Joplin was known as a solo artist even though she frequently included the name of the band that backed her up in her marketing.
I loved Janis Joplin, and thought her death a tragedy for the music world.
My youngest son tells me "She was apparently incredibly nice! Really good to her staff and fans". I think the best compliment is that you are interesting. I couldn't help but notice how interesting Janis was when I watched videos of her concerts and interviews. She continues to build a fan base, and it seems many of her fans are not even born yet.
I was an adult when I learned that Janis and I are family.
She is my 10th cousin.
Her 9th great grandparents are my 9th great grandparents.

Thank you for writing about Janis. She had so many layers. Her voice sounds as if she had lived every bit of lyric...that she knew heartache and joy mixed together.
ReplyDeleteI was watching videos of her concerts and interviews, and she really did know heartache and joy. She lived life to the fullest, and was a generous person.
