This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.
You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family you know!

The Buchner Family ~ All together

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2025: Week 22 (REUNION)

This is week 3 of my blogging style switch

For the next several weeks I will post a photo and a brief description.

This new style of posting is due to CMC Arthroplasty surgery on my left thumb.

I will continue with this style until my thumb has sufficiently recovered.

I'm not sure what the occasion was OR what year this photo was taken - BUT I love  this photo of Lyle & Nina Buchner with their 5 children.

Isobell Robertsone ~ Devoted, Creative, Independent

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2024: Week 22 (CREATIVITY)

I decided to take a creative approach to this week's prompt.

I began by searching for a name that meant creative that I recognized was in my tree.

I found Isobel "Devoted, creative, independent" 1

My 9th great grandmother, Isobell Robertsone.

The only source we have is the name listed on her daughter's baptism available on Ancestry & Family Search. The trail to X9 great grandmother Isobell is sourced well, but who she was is a mystery to me...

---- even after spending the past few days searching.

Her marriage on January 31st 1668 to X9 great grandfather, Andrew Cowgasse, was added on Family Search without sources or any details.

Their daughter
my X8 great grandmother, Elspeth Cowgasse,
was baptised September 4th 1669
in the parish of Parish of Mains and Strathmartine.

She married, Patrick Kinnier (X8 great grandfather)
June 4th 1695 in the same parish she was baptized in.

Since I could find no details, and have never heard anything about X9 great grandma Isobell, I wondered if she fit for the descriptions?

"Your tendency is to finish whatever you start. You like to use the pen or the needle (writing, fashion design etc). You are loving, compassionate, intuitive and humanitarian. Runs of luck, either good or bad, follow you. You are sympathetic, but at times might be touchy and oversensitive. You may have a gift for writing. You are intuitive and might be interested in the arts, drama or science.

Position and social status is very important for you and you are always looking for way to improve your position in society. You have power and ability to chose your own destiny and achieve anything you want in life. You can expand in any direction according to your will and the set of values. You have passion for justice and belong to the position of authority. You have an inherent courage and endurance to accomplish "The Impossible Dream". With the power comes responsibility. You hold keys to the material world, but with this gift comes high spiritual responsibility to be fair and true to others. You are philosophical and mature, determined and intense with a desire to endure, often religious."  2

It seems I have to engage in more research to discover my devoted, creative, and independent X9 great grandmother Isobell

Clyde Robertson ~ Find A Grave

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2023: Week 22 (AT THE CEMETERY)

This week I discovered my grandfather has a Find A Grave page.

My grandmother does not have a Find A Grave page.

There is no mention of her on Grandpa's page even though she is beside him.

I do not know who took the photo or who manages grandpa's page.

At first I was a bit surprised.

The more I thought about it I realized it's okay.

Find A Grave is a genealogy source.

This is a genealogical record of my grandfather.

The birthdate & location is unknown because Clyde Robertson didn't exist.

He was born Max Pellack on the homestead in Gronlid, Saskatchewan on May 10th 1910.

We can't be sure that date is accurate since his birth was never registered, but it was the day Grandpa claimed.

Clyde Robertson claimed to be born in San Francisco.

DNA has proven that Clyde Robertson was Max Pellack.

Max Pellack was born, but is not buried anywhere.

Clyde Robertson was never born, but is buried and recorded on this Find A Grave.

I wonder if more details should be included for grandpa, but I don't know the intent of the person who created his Find A Grave.

At some point in the future I may reach out for more information, or to add grandma.

For right now - it's okay that he is out there floating with only a small portion of his details.

I have yet to find the missing 10 years between leaving home & meeting grandma - maybe someone out there knows, and will add it to his Find A Grave page.

When your family member is not who they claimed to be!!!

Conflict In the Ring ~ Conflict In the Tree

This week's prompt CONFLICT had me thinking about fighting.

When I attended the Roots Tech Conference I noted a connection with Muhammad Ali in the cousin connecting area of the conference. I decided then that I would write about this fighter's connection to our family when the prompt fit.

This week - the prompt fit, and I set out to find the connection to Muhammed Ali only to discover some CONFLICTING information.

WikiTree, a collaborative family tree, outlines the 21 degree connection with my husband's family line.

The chart above is pretty straight forward for connecting the two lines.

Too bad the father of Hannah (nee Corman) Lee is not accurate.

When I first looked at the connection I was confused so I went back to my tree to see who Hannah's parents were & what sort of sources I had.

I discovered that Hannah's parent were clearly documented as

Hans Johannes Jerrick (John George) Kornmann (Korman) (Corman)
BIRTH 2 MAR 1732 • Republic of the Seven United Netherlands
DEATH 1804 • Stoney Creek, Hamilton Municipality, Ontario, Canada
and
Sarah Harrison
BIRTH 1738
DEATH Ontario, Canada

Conflicting things further - on WikiTree Hannah's father is noted as  John "George" George Corman in the Biography of Hannah Corman Lee. Yet her parents are listed as Daniel Mosby and Sarah Harris with no supporting documentation in the clickables at the top.

How exactly the wrong parents ended up attached to Hannah is a mystery that is seen too frequently on the shared Trees online.

Back to Roots Tech & their notation of the relationship I decided to check Family Search which added another layer to the conflict.

Family Search, a shared one world tree, notes the cousin connection is via Hannah (nee Corman) Lee's maternal line. Her mother Sarah Harrison (not Sarah Harris) was the daughter of Benjamin Harrison IV & Anne Carter without supporting documentation for her being their child. If she was their daughter there should be evidence to support it since both families have been well researched.

I did find it interesting that both Family Search and WikiTree note the cousin connection between my husband and Muhammed Ali as through Hannah (nee Corman) Lee.

At this time I have found no evidence for this connection in our Bramble Bush.

Remembering that not everything you find on the internet is true!!!

Waiting For Military Records ~ Library & Archives Canada

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 22 (MILITARY)

Recently my husband submitted the paperwork to receive his military records and release papers. The reply email from Library & Archives Canada said there would be a significant delay in providing the documents because they are currently working on the submissions received in October of 2019.

This got me to thinking about the submission I had done for my grandfather's records. I decided to check when I submitted them.

I submitted for grandpa's in May of 2019. At that time they replied "Due to the large number of inquiries received, we are currently experiencing delays in our response time.  As our workload permits, we estimate that we will be able to provide you with a reply in approximately fourteen months."

Realizing that it's been 2 years since I submitted, and several months before the date noted in my husband's reply I decided a follow-up email was in order.

After sending the email I received a rather quick reply letting me know they were currently working on requests submitted in October 2018, and at this time they are estimating 28 months for response.

The discrepancy in dates shows they are working on submissions for personal records before records from family members.

This made sense to me once I got my reply that included:
"We understand that such delays are difficult for our researchers and we apologize. We assure you we are responding to your request as fast as possible and it will be processed in due course."

My husband's included a means of getting priority service.
"
Due to the high volume of urgent requests, priority service will be given to requests where documentation is required for medical or employment purposes, bursaries, benefits and services, which clearly demonstrate an urgency or deadline."

Clearly those who are asking for their personal records do take priority over those of us seeking for research purposes as shown in the reasons an urgent request could be granted.

Those of us waiting for Military records from Library & Archives Canada need to be patient.

I have waited my whole life for this information I can wait a little bit longer.

Patience is a virtue!!!
