 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2022: Week 40 (PRESERVATION)

Week 40 had me thinking about self-preservation. 

This past week I was in our Nation's capital (Ottawa) for a conference. Since our kids live there it was a bonus opportunity to spend some time with them. 

It was an amazing week with lots of great information at the conference, and fun times with our kids. My husband was jealous that he couldn't join me. 

I had been worried about exposing the kids to covid so was super careful in the days before leaving,  in the airports & on the plane. 

No symptoms the entire time I was there.

When I arrived home on Thursday I did a test before bed even though I had no symptoms. I wanted to be sure - 1st test negative.

On Friday I woke up feeling like my chest was tight. 

By noon I had a fever - 2nd test negative. 

As the afternoon turned to evening I developed more symptoms. 

Before bed - 3rd test negative. 

I began to  wonder if our box of tests were duds.

On Saturday I woke up feeling awful, but decided it was a cold/flu since all the tests had been negative.

At noon I received a message from our oldest that he and our daughter-in-law tested positive. 

I decided another test was needed. As soon as the fluid headed up the test the positive line appeared - 4th test positive. 

Long story short - 6 of us spent time together on Monday and Tuesday. 4 of us began with symptoms on Friday, and tested positive on Saturday. 1 of us had covid a couple of months ago, and the 6th appears to be immune. 

I thought I was immune until this week. 

My husband had covid in the spring. I didn't get it even though we shared space.

The only consolation I have is that I didn't take it to the kids. 

We were all exposed at the same time as evidenced by our symptom/testing timelines. 

Back to self-preservation. 

I am not feeling very well. In fact I am feeling awful, and even worse when I don't take my fever & cold meds on time.

It would be understandable if I skipped writing my blog this week.  

In pondering not writing this week I thought about my reasons for writing. 

First I write for me. A tangible record of the research I have done.

Second I write for my children. A record for the future when I might not be here to answer their questions.

Third I write for a future me. A record to be found by someone, in the future, like me who is searching for where they fit in their own family story. 

Someday my kids may read this blog & remember the visit we shared. They may even see some humour in the fact that the 4 of us who got covid had honestly begun to feel like we were immune since we had avoided it over the past almost 3 years even with exposures. 

For this reason I decided writing this week about covid AND a family member named PRESERVED would be a quick entry. 

In October 2019 I wrote about 2nd cousin 9x removed Preserved Strong, but he is not the only PRESERVED in our Bramble Bush. 

Preserved is a Puritan name "...it would be pronounced Pre-serv-ed, emphasis on the middle syllable. His full name probably was Preserved in the Lord meaning his strength to resist evil and to prosper came from his ongoing belief in God." 1

I remember when I first found the Puritan lines in our Bramble Bush. The names intrigued me. It also intrigued me that not all of the children born to a couple were given these odd names. As noted below only 2 were given these Puritan names. The other 6 were given traditional family names.

As often happens when I work on this section of the tree I had to be careful with adding new members. I already had Sarah in our Bramble Bush. Her brother Thomas was married to my 9th great aunt, Anne Ford. 

Preserved & Sarah (nee Newberry) Clapp had 8 children that I could find records for.

While teasing apart the spouses for their children I discovered an error I made at some point in the past where I made a sister a daughter.  With a search through records I managed to untangle that mess.

Along with this error I also discovered several of their children married into other areas of our Bramble Bush. A few I had to merge as duplicates. Whenever I research this part of our Bramble Bush I end up going back and forth ensuring I haven't duplicated & ultimately merging where I have made errors.

It was then that I realized I was spending more time working on this blog than I had intended, but what else was I going to do since I was bored laying on the couch.

When your quick entry results in a lot more digging!!!

Leaving North Berwick ~ A Tale of 3 Siblings

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 20 (TRAVEL)

This is a tale of three siblings who moved away from Scotland in very different directions.

Their parents were:
Thomas Thomson
BIRTH ABT. 1849 • Buckhaven, East Wemyss, Fife, Scotland
DEATH 22 FEB 1919 • Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
and
Isabella Glass
BIRTH ABT 1848 • North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland
DEATH 29 JUL 1943 • Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh, Scotland

The 1911 census snipped below confirms their marriage date of July 22nd 1870 (the notes on the photo above) since it states they were married for 40 years.
It also records they had 8 children who were still living in 1911.  

Below you will find the basic information for all 8 children, but this week's prompt TRAVEL focuses on child 4, 5, & 6. It's these three that appear to have had the need to see more of the world.

My great grandfather Thomas Thomson moved to Canada. 
His brother, James Devlin Glass Thomson moved to New Zealand. 
His sister, Agnes Thomson moved to South Africa.


Before looking at these three for this blog I had never realized that they were connected in birth order. 


Did they grow up as close friends?  


Did they dream of travel while they were growing up?


I will never really know what took each to the countries they would call home.


How is that they grew up in the seaside town of North Berwick, with a father who was a fisherman, and ended up so far away?

My grandmother was born in #8

My dad told me that his grandfather (Thomas Thomson) did not want to be a fisherman so sought out a different career. He became a stonemason, and lived in Canada, the United States, and Scotland. 


James Devlin Glass Thomson was a Joiner's Apprentice in Scotland's 1901 census. New Zealand's 1938 Electoral Records James is a carpenter.


How Agnes ended up in South Africa is a mystery. She arrived before getting married in South Africa, and having her first child. She met her husband, Herbert William Smith in South Africa. Herbert fought in the Boar War as a medic with the Gordon Highlanders.  Her second child was born in Scotland before the family of 4 returned to South Africa.

Mary never left Scotland, never married, she lived to 103, and died in Edinburgh. My grandmother was named after this aunt.
The name Mary Thomson is too common a name to conduct a reasonably exhaustive search using available records.

DEATH 5 MAY 1950 • Deaconess Hospital, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Bella married William Haughie who was a tailor. They raised their family in Edinburgh.

Henry married Bessie in Edinburgh where they raised their family.
I found pay records for Henry listed him as a Marine Joiner from
1916 to 1920, Firth of Forth at Rosyth, Fife, Scotland.

DEATH 30 JUL 1956 • 205 Berea Street, Pretoria, Eastern Cape, South Africa
Agnes married Herbert William Smith in South Africa. They had their first child there, but the 2nd was born in Scotland. I wonder if it was a family tradition to return to North Berwick for the birth of children.

Thomas married Elizabeth Young Slicer in North Berwick, and moved to Canada. They  returned to Scotland to have their first child, and then stayed to have their second (my grandmother) because WW1 started. After the war they went back to Calgary, Alberta, Canada and moved back into their home there.

James move to New Zealand, and married Elsie Winifred Genge. They remained in New Zealand, and raised their family there. James worked as a carpenter.

BIRTH 14 FEB 1887 • Someville's Court, North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland
DEATH Unknown
Laura married John Cleghorn Robertson. I haven't been able to find any further details for Laura. John's 1921 Attestation Papers record him as an electrician, and that he was not married. Laura appears have died before 1921.

Richard Alexander Thomson
1892–
BIRTH 12 JUL 1892 • Tynemouth, Northumberland, England
DEATH Unknown
The family was enumerated in England in 1891, and must have remained through to 1892 when Richard was born.  He is the only 1 (of the 8) that was not born in North Berwick. I haven't confirmed his death details. There are several trees on Ancestry that note he may have died in England (1918) possibly from the Spanish Flu epidemic.

In discussion with a distant cousin about why the family was in England he said that the area they were enumerated in (Tynmouth) had the  North Shields Fish Quay which is one of the largest ports for prawns. With Thomas being a fisherman the logical reason for their being there was fishing.

As a Canadian I didn't really understand just how close Scotland and England are. Google maps show clearly the hypothesis of heading south to follow the catch as a logical one.

As I looked at this map I realized maybe the three who journeyed far were not the only ones who had the need to travel. It appears as though Thomas & Isabella traveled some too. Maybe they were on the move between census records. Maybe they traveled in search of the best fishing spots. Maybe they created the travel bug in their children. Even the ones who stayed in Scotland didn't stay in North Berwick. 

While searching for information I came across this photo I wondered if Isabella could be in this photo. Maybe they were in search of Herring when they headed south. Or maybe they were in search of opportunity which is the likely reason their children headed away from the seaside town of North Berwick.

Preserved Strong (the person) ~ Preserving Fall Harvest (the bounty)

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 40 (HARVEST)

When I first thought about the prompt HARVEST I looked to see if we had anyone in our family tree named Autumn. 



Nope!  


Then I remembered a branch of my tree that included early Puritan settlers of Massachusetts. I knew there were many Thankfuls and wondered about anyone named Bounty or Blessing - None! Feeling disappointed I kept looking through the unusual names. I found Preserved Strong. Born to Jebediah & Freedom (nee Woodward) Strong. 

"He was born March 29, 1680, and is said to have received
his name from the fact that he was born in a great snow storm, and preserved,
'notwithstanding its severity, and the extreme cold weather following.'" 1

I have always thought of the word preserved in reference to maintaining or retaining. 

The early Puritan settlers viewed it differently when naming children. 

"PRESERVED   m & f    English (Puritan)       Name given to a child when spared from certain death during childbirth."  2

Returning to the topic of fall harvest and preserving the bounty!

Growing up my mom always scooted us kids away while she was preserving the garden harvest. She told us it was too dangerous for us to be underfoot. Once I was grown she confessed it was her way of getting some alone time, but it was too late for me to not be afraid of the process.
    

The first time my husband said he wanted to try canning I argued with him that the process was subject to explosions in the kitchen and if he wasn't careful the food he made could kill us. I have repeated a variation of this sentiment for 25 years. 



Luckily for our family he doesn't listen to me. All winter long we enjoy HIS jams, pickles, salsa, canned fruit, and frozen vegies. I take no credit for any of the harvested preserves. My fear is still solidly in place. There are times I suspiciously look at the jar to see if it looks like it holds my impending death. I avoid the kitchen (or crane my neck suspiciously from the doorway) while he is processing his preserves. I am visualizing explosions that involve goo dripping down the walls with ginormous shards of glass embedded everywhere. Now that he wears glasses I no long discreetly place safety goggles on the counter. I am only slightly exaggerating my fear of the preserving process.

Tale of Two Cousins ~ Ann(e) Kirk Graham

Cousins - First Friends

In my first tree on Ancestry I used the shaky leaf hints, and had quite a few mistakes in assigning children to their parents. 


Traditional Scottish naming patterns can create confusion when attaching children to parents because the names are repeated. The traditional naming patterns can also provide clarity and confirmation when viewed with caution.


There was one that was more confusing than others.



The two Ann(e) Kirk Grahams who were 1st cousins.

Second born was Peter Graham (James' father was Peter)
Third born was Grace Graham (Elizabeth's mother was  Grizel/Grace)
Fourth born was Alexander (Elizabeth's father was Alexander)
Fifth born was Ann Kirk Graham above (James' mother was Ann(e) Kirk)
Sixth born was Isabella Graham (named after mother's sister)
Seventh born was Jane (Jean) Graham (named after mother's sister)
Eighth born was Elisabeth Graham (named after mother & father's sister)
Ninth born was William Graham (named after mother's brother or older brother)

Peter & Anne's second child, Robert, is my 4th great grandfather

She was their 4th child, second daughter. 

First born was Marion Weir Graham (Susanah's mother was Marion Weir)
Second born was Peter Graham (named after Robert's father)
Third born was Andrew Graham (Susana's father was Andrew)
Fourth born was Anne Kirk Graham above (named after Robert's mother)
Fifth born was Susan Graham (named after her mother)
Sixth born was Robert Graham (named after his father)
Seventh born was Catherine Graham (named after mother's sister)
Eighth born was William Graham (named after father' brother - below)
Ninth born was Thomas Graham (named after mother's brother)


In looking at the names of the children born to these brothers the Scottish naming patterns are pretty clear.

The naming patterns are as below
1st boy - named after father's father
1st girl - named after mother's mother
2nd boy - named after mother's father
2nd girl - named after father's mother
3rd boy - named after father
3rd girl - named after mother
4 or more children were named after the siblings of the parents. There was also a variation of naming after great grandparents. I can't say for certain if that is what happened with these two brothers because I haven't gone further up the tree for anyone except Susanah (Susan) Hamilton.

who may be related to Susanah's grandfather (above), but that research has not been done to date.


Going back to Ann(e) Kirk who married Peter Graham, and was the grandmother of the two Ann(e)s who are the subject of this blog. Ann(e)'s name was interchangeably used with an E on the end, and sometime no E. One granddaughter got the E, and the other did not. 


Census records show that when Anne Kirk Graham was 6 her family had moved to Carnwath from Lesmahagow. Ann Kirk Graham's family remained living in Lesmahagow. While only a 31 minute car ride in today's world the distance would have been pretty far in 1853.

The Ann(e)'s were only 3 years apart & living near  each other until 1953. I imagine they were close cousins who visited with each other's families and their grandparents. When Anne Kirk Graham's family moved away the loss would have been hard. Then again - I am probably projecting as I have experienced this firsthand.


The Peter & Ann(e) (nee Kirk) Graham BRICK WALL remains fully in place.  I have not been able to find any children beyond the 4 noted above. I haven't been able to confirm birth, marriage, or death for Peter & Ann(e).
