This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.
You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family you know!

Grizel to Grace ~ Changing the Optics

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 48 (GRATITUDE)

When I first found the name Grizel in an ancestor's record I pondered why anyone would name their child after the tough inedible part of meat (gristle). I just couldn't imagine why a parent would name their new baby girl after such a yucky thing. Next I wondered if the child was particularly whiny, and named after the grizzly noises they made.  I then thought maybe the child was born with hair the colour of 'salt & pepper', and it was a spelling variation of grizzled

When I found several named Grizel in the records I was searching I realized there must be something more to this name.

The name Grizel is:

"Scottish and English variant of Griselda, from Old German,
possibly meaning "grey battle-maiden". "
                                           1

What I found interesting is that all of the Grizels I found were known as Grace.
The name Grace invokes far more attractive visuals that the name Grizel did for me.

I love the name Grace. I also love the word Grace. It's a part of my everyday language. I frequently comment that I am grateful the people that care about me give me grace. I am not perfect, and the grace offered by those around me assists me in living life authentically.

GRACE & GRATITUDE walk hand in hand.

Now back to the name:
"Grizel / Grizelda / Griselda
This name is thought to have been derived from the Old German
"grisja" (grey) and "hild" (battle). The 14th century author Boccaccio
wrote a story about Patient Griselda in the Decameron and the English
author Chaucer wrote a version of this in "The Clerk's Tale" which
popularised the name and associated it with patience. Grizel became a
popular form in Scotland though there were many variations -
Grizzel, Girsel, Girzel and Goirzel. It was used by both the nobility and
commoners - one well known bearer of the name was
Lady Grizel Baillie (1665-1746), daughter of a Covenanter,
the 1st Earl of Marchmont. She wrote a number of Scots songs and her
"Household Book" was reprinted by the Scottish History Society in 1911.
In Scotland, Grizel sometimes became Grace
and a diminutive form was Zelda."   1

and
"Grace
The name Grace came originally from the Latin "gratia" meaning
"grace" or "favour". It was not found often in Britain or Scotland until the
Puritans took it up in the 17th century, prompted by their phrase
"by the grace of God". The Puritans took the name to North America.
In Scotland it became quite popular in the 19th century but in a
number of cases it was derived from another popular name, Grizel, which
became "gris" and "Grace" (see also below). The name was given a boost
as a result of the heroine Grace Darling (1815-1842) who rescued some
shipwrecked sailors off the coast of Northumberland. In 1900, Grace
was the 22nd most popular first name in Scotland. However, in recent years,
despite Princess Grace of Monaco, the name is
not found often in Scotland."
2

All of the Grizels I found were in Scottish records. The first Grizel I found in our Bramble Bush was the mother-in-law of my 5th great uncle.

BIRTH 16 JUL 1811 • Closeburn, Dumfries, Thornhill, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotlan
DEATH 23 MAR 1886 • Drowned in River Dothan, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire

This couple has been very memorable for me because it is through one of their descendants that I was finally able to confirm this family line.  Prior to the DNA match I had taken my 5th great grandparents out of my tree several times. I had started my tree over twice concerned I may have not researched accurately.

The DNA match finally allowed me to believe I had reasonably exhausted my search, and could claim my 5th great grandparents: Peter & Ann (nee Kirk) Graham.

The DNA match confirmed that James Graham was the brother
of my 4th great grandfather
Robert Graham
BIRTH 16 JAN 1814 • Thornhill, Closeburn, Dumfries-shire, Scotland
DEATH 24 MAR 1892 • Forth, Lanarkshire, Scotland
married (my 4th great grandmother)
Susanah (Susan) Hamilton
BIRTH 03 NOV 1814 • Carnwath, Lanarkshire
DEATH 11 APR 1894 • Forth, Lanarkshire, Scotland

The parents of James & Robert Graham were:
Peter Graham
BIRTH ABT 1788 • Closeburn, Dumfriesshire
DEATH Unknown
and
Ann Kirk
BIRTH ABT 1785
DEATH Unknown

James and Robert had two sisters that I have found so far:
Mary Graham
BIRTH 9 FEB 1819 • Crawfordjohn, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
DEATH Unknown
and
Elizabeth Graham (who married William Stark)
BIRTH 10 FEB 1821 • Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland:
DEATH 22 NOV 1903 • 16 Anderson Street, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire

My brick wall still stands at Peter Graham & Ann Kirk. I have found birth records for the 4 children I have listed. I have found no birth, marriage, or death records for either of them. I have found no records for other children. |I am still searching.

By using family line specific DNA profile photos I can easily see where DNA matches have confirmed the paper trail research.

Still searching to get past the brick walls!

Tale of Two Cousins ~ Ann(e) Kirk Graham

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 38 (COUSINS)

Cousins - First Friends

In my first tree on Ancestry I used the shaky leaf hints, and had quite a few mistakes in assigning children to their parents.

Traditional Scottish naming patterns can create confusion when attaching children to parents because the names are repeated. The traditional naming patterns can also provide clarity and confirmation when viewed with caution.

There was one that was more confusing than others.

The two Ann(e) Kirk Grahams who were 1st cousins.

Robert's older brother James on the right
The DNA symbol profile photo notes
confirmed DNA match for the family line

My 4th great aunt Anne Kirk (Annie) Graham
BIRTH 19 JAN 1847 • Lesmahagow, Lanark
DEATH 16 MAY 1918 • Galashiels, Selkirkshire, Scotland
&
my 1st cousin X5 removed

BIRTH 27 FEB 1850 • Lesmahagow, Lanark
DEATH 26 JAN 1876 • Lesmahagow Lanarkshire Scotland

My 5th Great Grandparents

                               DEATH Unknown                  DEATH Unknown

Anne and Peter had two sons & 2 daughters.

Their first child was James, my 5th great uncle

James Graham
BIRTH 16 JUL 1811 • Closeburn, Dumfrieshire, Scotland
DEATH 23 MAR 1886 • Drowned in River Dothan, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire
married to my 5th great aunt
Elizabeth Pate
BIRTH 16 JUL 1818 • Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH 19 JULY 1873 • Turfholm, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Their daughter (my 1st cousin, X5 removed)
Ann Kirk Graham
BIRTH 27 FEB 1850 • Lesmahagow, Lanark
DEATH 26 JAN 1876 • Lesmahagow Lanarkshire Scotland

She was their 5th child, second daughter.

First born was William Graham (born before parent's marriage)
Second born was Peter Graham (James' father was Peter)
Third born was Grace Graham (Elizabeth's mother was  Grizel/Grace)

Fourth born was Alexander (Elizabeth's father was Alexander)
Fifth born was Ann Kirk Graham above (James' mother was Ann(e) Kirk)
Sixth born was Isabella Graham (named after mother's sister)
Seventh born was Jane (Jean) Graham (named after mother's sister)
Eighth born was Elisabeth Graham (named after mother & father's sister)
Ninth born was William Graham (named after mother's brother or older brother)

Peter & Anne's second child, Robert, is my 4th great grandfather
Robert Graham
BIRTH 16 JAN 1814 • Thornhill, Closeburn, Dumfrieshire, Scotland
DEATH 24 MAR 1892 • Forth, Lanarkshire, Scotland
married to my 4th great grandmother
Susanah (Susan) Hamilton
BIRTH 03 NOV 1814 • Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH 11 APR 1894 • Forth, Lanarkshire, Scotland

There daughter (4th great aunt)

Anne Kirk (Annie) Graham
BIRTH 19 JAN 1847 • Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH 16 MAY 1918 • Galashiels, Selkirkshire, Scotland

She was their 4th child, second daughter.

First born was Marion Weir Graham (Susanah's mother was Marion Weir)
Second born was Peter Graham (named after Robert's father)
Third born was Andrew Graham (Susana's father was Andrew)

Fourth born was Anne Kirk Graham above (named after Robert's mother)
Fifth born was Susan Graham (named after her mother)
Sixth born was Robert Graham (named after his father)
Seventh born was Catherine Graham (named after mother's sister)
Eighth born was William Graham (named after father' brother - below)
Ninth born was Thomas Graham (named after mother's brother)

In looking at the names of the children born to these brothers the Scottish naming patterns are pretty clear.

The naming patterns are as below
1st boy - named after father's father

1st girl - named after mother's mother
2nd boy - named after mother's father
2nd girl - named after father's mother
3rd boy - named after father
3rd girl - named after mother
4 or more children were named after the siblings of the parents. There was also a variation of naming after great grandparents. I can't say for certain if that is what happened with these two brothers because I haven't gone further up the tree for anyone except Susanah (Susan) Hamilton.

Susanah's children were not named after her grandparents

Thomas Hamilton
BIRTH 15 JUL 1749 • Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH 2 APR 1818 • Douglas Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland
and
Marion Tudhope
BIRTH 1749 • Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH 4 MAY 1821 • Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland
&
John Weir
BIRTH ABT. 1755 • Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH Scotland
and

Anne Stark
BIRTH ABT. 1757 • Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH Scotland

Not to be forgotten
Peter & Ann(e) (nee Kirk) Graham's daughter were

3rd born child
Mary Graham
BIRTH 9 FEB 1819 • Crawfordjohn, Lanarkshire, Scotland
DEATH Unknown
I have no further information about Mary at this time

4th born child
Elizabeth Graham
BIRTH 10 FEB 1821 • Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland:
DEATH 22 NOV 1903 • 16 Anderson Street, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire
who married
William Stark
who may be related to Susanah's grandfather (above), but that research has not been done to date.

Going back to Ann(e) Kirk who married Peter Graham, and was the grandmother of the two Ann(e)s who are the subject of this blog. Ann(e)'s name was interchangeably used with an E on the end, and sometime no E. One granddaughter got the E, and the other did not.

Census records show that when Anne Kirk Graham was 6 her family had moved to Carnwath from Lesmahagow. Ann Kirk Graham's family remained living in Lesmahagow. While only a 31 minute car ride in today's world the distance would have been pretty far in 1853.

Ann's home on the left, Anne's home on the right

The Ann(e)'s were only 3 years apart & living near  each other until 1953. I imagine they were close cousins who visited with each other's families and their grandparents. When Anne Kirk Graham's family moved away the loss would have been hard. Then again - I am probably projecting as I have experienced this firsthand.

The Peter & Ann(e) (nee Kirk) Graham BRICK WALL remains fully in place.  I have not been able to find any children beyond the 4 noted above. I haven't been able to confirm birth, marriage, or death for Peter & Ann(e).

Cousins by birth, friends by choice!

Robert Graham ~ Scottish Carrier

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 18 (Road Trip)

My X4 great grandfather, Robert Graham was born the 16th of January in 1814  in Thornhill, Closeburn, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. His parents were Peter Graham (born about 1788) and Ann(e) Kirk (born about 1785). I have found records for 3 more children born to Peter & Ann (nee Kirk) Graham. I have not been able to find any other records to date, but am confident these are my people. I have a DNA match to Robert's brother James' descendants. No match to either of their sisters (Mary & Elizabeth) at this time. Peter Graham and Ann Kirk are one of my brick walls. I have no record of their birth, marriage or death. Until I found the DNA match to James' descendants I wasn't confident they were actually my X5 great grandparents. I have taken them out of my tree to start researching again only to put them back into my tree at least 5 times. After the DNA match appeared I put a note in their records reminding me to not take them out. I am reasonably exhausted that the research is correct.

Robert married Susanah (Susan) Hamilton on the 4th of June 1842 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Susanah (Susan) was born on the 3rd of November 1814 in Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland.  Susan was the 5th child of 9 children born to Andrew Hamilton (2 Sep 1775 - 28 Jan 1836/37) and Marion Weir (14 Jul 1781 - 17 Aug 1826).

Robert and Susan had 9 children. Their son Robert is my X3 great grandfather who was married to Margaret/Maggie Burt. Their son Robert is my X2 great grandfather who was married to Jessie Crawford Gray, and they immigrated to Canada in 1911. Their son Robert (known as Bob/Bobby) is my great grandfather who was married to Nellie (Con)Cannon. I am the granddaughter of Robert and Nellie's only son John Robert (known as Jack/Jacky).

Have you gotten lost in the long line of Robert Grahams that I descend from?  I know I have been lost among the Robert Grahams many times while researching.

Now back to Robert Graham, my x4 great grandfather.

In the 1851 Census we find Robert and family living in Firdon farming 11 acres.

Are you asking what does this have to do with ROAD TRIP yet?  I am so glad you asked.

By 1961 we find Robert and family have moved. They are now residing on Muir Row, but still in Lanarkshire. Their parish is no longer Lesmahagow. They are now in the Carnwath parish. Robert's occupation is no longer a farmer. He is now a Carrier. Robert ROAD TRIPPED everyday all day, and as the future census ecords show he continued road tripping for many years.

Finding  Robert's occupation assisted in my researching his family. I was able to confirm that the census records I was finding were still for the right family because of Robert's occupation. In 1871 and 1881 he is listed as a Carrier still, and in 1891 he's a Retired Carrier.

In 1871 they have moved again, and are residing at Heathland. Their parish is still Carnwath. They now have a granddaughter residing with them. This new piece of information provided more clues in my searching.

By the next census Robert and Susan are 65 years old, and living alone at the same residence.

By 1891 Robert is retired. He and Susan are still living at the same residence just the two of them.

Neither Robert or Susan can be found in any future census because Robert died the following year in 1892 and Susan in 1894

Robert Graham
January 16th 1814 ~ March 24th 1892
Thornhill, Dumfrieshire, Scotland ~ Forth, Lanarkshire, Scotland

Susanah (Susan) Hamilton

November 3rd 1814 ~ April 11th 1894
Carnwath, Lanarkshire, Scotland ~ Forth, Lanarkshire, Scotland

At the time of their death their grandson (my X2 great grandfather) was 8 when his grandfather died, and 11 when his grandmother died. Their grandson grew up about 9 miles from his grandparents. Its seems the family stayed fairly close together until their grandson grew up, married, and moved his family to Canada. One of Robert and Jessie's sons left Canada, and headed back to the United Kingdom (residing in England). It appears as though the rest of the family stayed in Canada, but I am still searching.

Jack (my grandfather) and his father Robert (great grandson to Robert  & Susan [nee Hamilton] Graham) who was known as Bob/Bobby
(born Holytown Scotland in 1906, and immigrated to Canada in 1911)

Follow the paper trail to ensure a reasonable exhaustive search.

This is why I search -
