Richard Glass, Ag Lab ~ Agricultural Labourer, 1841 Census

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2025: Week 35 (OFF TO WORK)

In the 1841 Scottish Census my 4th great grandfather, Richard Glass, was noted as Ag Lab.

I briefly wondered if it was a scientific laboratory type employment, but in an earlier record I found him listed as a butcher so I thought that might be a stretch for 71 year old X4 great grandpa given his prior career.

Not knowing what 'Ag Lab' could be I began researching. 

I discovered it's short for Agricultural Labourer, 

"The term ag lab did not exist before the 1841 census returns. It began because census enumerators were instructed to it as an abbreviated occupational term. Before 1841 these workers were referred to as labourers, farm servants, servants of husbandry or other more descriptive and specific terms such as shepherd, ploughman, hedger and many more. Despite their speciality being named, they were certainly identifiable as those who were employed on the land. Family historians still perpetuate the term “ag lab”." 1

It was this census record that I discovered X4 great grandfather was born in England. This family line appeared to have been in North Berwick Scotland forever, and it was this record that let me know they arrived sometime before their first child was born in 1805.

X4 great grandma, Mary Wright, was born south of North Berwick in Eyemouth. 

Her family appears to have not been in North Berwick in the years after Richard & Mary are there.

I have not found their marriage registry so am unable to say if they met in North Berwick or if they moved their together.

In looking at this branch of our Bramble Bush I realized the search continues since I have quite a bit of missing info on this line.

My X3 great grandfather James, my X3 great grandmother Mary, their 8 year old son Richard (my X2 great uncle.

There is much more to find when you go back and take another look!!!

It's All Mixed Up ~ Remembering the 80s

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2024: Week 35 (ALL MIXED UP)

This week I had a personal realization. 

Much of my growing up was influenced by the music I listened to.

Many of my memories are triggered by hearing a song.

I also immediately think of songs when I hear different phrases.

Like this week's ALL MIXED UP prompt, I immediately remembered the song from THE CARS.

Take a listen - see if any memories are evoked for you.

My immediate memory was of babysitting for my aunt. 

She had 2 young children, an epic record collection, and a stereo that sounded awesome when it was turned up very loud. 

She was also the aunt who shared her clothes with me whenever I asked - even if she was currently wearing them. 

Our special relationship began when we were both pretty young - she was just 10 when she became an aunt.

Weren't we both soooo cute .. the adorable dog was Tiny.

A couple of weeks ago we were visiting my sister-in-law's farm, and the old photos came out.

I really loved these 2 gems:

Chris and his sister

Solidly in the same time frame that I was listening to The Cars

            - I have no doubt those 2 with their matching 80s hair were too.

I have heard tales of the two of them practicing their dance moves to the various songs they loved.

Watching them Karaoke to the song they frequently danced and sang to I have no doubt they were epic. 

It's too bad I couldn't share the video of them performing FLASHDANCE, WHAT A FEELING.

Just picture the two of them while watching the video .... they even included the water scenes. 

When a song takes you back to that moment in the past!!!

When the World Watched a Disaster ~ Amelia Earhart

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2023: Week 35 (DISASTER)

My husband's grandmother, Nina Merle Vannatter, was 11 years old when the world watched as Amelia Earhart disappeared while trying to be the first to fly solo around the world. 

When she disappeared on July 2nd 1937 it really was a disaster.

Along with Amelia was her navigator, Fred Noonan.

11th great grandparents ~ David & Magdallen (nee Stewart) Kinnier

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2022: Week 35 (FREE SPACE)

For this week's prompt, FREE SPACE, I decided to follow up on last week's timeline after noticing I didn't have the Thomson line back very far.

I began looking at the sources for the folks I did have in our Bramble Bush, and then adding details and folks to see how far I could go back.

I arrived to my 7th great grandfather:

The Thomson line in Scotland is difficult to ensure it is the right family member being added. This is as far back as I have made it for the Thomson line. The reason for my stop was an inability to ensure it was my Thomson line I was following given the common names. 

In the past I would just give up there. 

This time I decided to follow further back on the wives line.

Tracking back on 7th great grandmother Agnes' line I was able to go back 4 more generations to my 11th great grandparents.

This is all of the information I currently have for my 11th great grandparents. 

Noting X11 great grandfather David's birth place I decided to check out Angus, Scotland. 

Scotland isn't a big country, but the travel distance between Angus & North Berwick where the Thomson family ended is great. 

How they ended up in North Berwick is a mystery.

While working in this section of our Bramble Bush it can be challenging to get the generations correct. As an example. our William above married an Elizabeth. His parents were William and Elizabeth. At one point I had children assigned to the junior couple that were born when they were 11 & 12.  Definitely need to be more careful while adding folks and facts.

Unforgettable ~ Finding Relatives You Didn't Know Were Missing

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 35 (UNFORGETTABLE)

This week I was thinking that 'you don't know what you don't know until you do'. This is true when searching far and wide for family that you end up finding practically in your own neighbourhood. 

I wrote about this in a previous blog about my dad's side of the family.
Searching Far & Wide ~ Found Across Town

This week I had an entire branch of my mom's maternal line appear when I didn't even know it was missing. 

It all started with  a DNA match for a person who had no tree. I messaged via Ancestry in June 2019, and promptly forgot about it. This month I received a reply with family information, and an introduction to his mom who lives in the next town over. She is my grandma's first cousin on their Dendy family line. Her father & my grandmother's mother were siblings. 

In talking with her she remembers my grandmother. The age difference left them not close, but they knew about each other. 

I remember hearing stories about this particular uncle. I don't remember ever meeting him. 

It left me wondering. How is it that families lose touch. 

Regardless of how it happened. 

I am so glad to have rediscovered these unforgettable relatives. 

Getting jazzed about researching particular branches leaves no time to write!

Adam Slicer ~ Not a Slicer!

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: Week 35 (AT WORK)

In golf the phrase SLICE refers to a poorly executed golf shot. I imagine that my X2 great uncle, Adam Slicer, enjoyed a lot of teasing about his last name since he was employed as a Golf Pro.


This census record was the first evidence I found that Adam was a golf pro.

I was intrigued by this because I had never heard that anyone in my dad's family had ever played golf. 


When trying to find more information about Adam and his golf career it was very difficult. All the sites with Adam, Slicer & Golf brought up slicing as a golf shot. 


It wasn't long before I discovered that part of Adam's career had been very close to my own hometown.

 "Our investigation of the Mission G&CC began with an
announcement in the Vancouver Daily Province, April 11, 1925.
“Adam Slicer, formerly the assistant professional at the Calgary G&CC
and latterly attached to the staff at Shaughnessy Heights,
has been appointed professional at Mission G&CC."

By May the club had 6 holes open for play and invited the Chilliwack golfers
to join them for a match. Unfortunately the mighty Fraser appeared
stronger than the dykes erected to protect the course. On June 13, 1925
the course laid submerged under six feet of water.

“Not to be undaunted by this set-back officials of the club proceeded to
look for new ground. Through the energetic efforts of the President R.P. King
a lease has been secured on the property known as the Morton estate.”
This tract of land occupied Lot 165 (see map). The club constructed the course
on the high ground adjacent to the CPR line. Adam Slicer described the new site
“as an ideal one, and when the regulation 18 hole course is completed next year, Mission City will have a golf course equal to the best in the province.”  1

The three who passed away before reaching adulthood were:

James Wright Slicer (1892-1898, age 6 - Diptheria)

It seems that golf skill is a trait from both sides of my dad's maternal family line.  Adam Slicers's sister was my great grandmother Elizabeth Young Slicer (known as Lizzie). She married Thomas Thomson. Their daughter Mary Elizabeth Thomson is my grandmother. 

Thomas' uncle (my grandmother's great uncle) Jimmy Glass was a golf pro in New Jersey (1908) before returning to North Berwick, Scotland in 1911.

North Berwick is a small seaside town. In 1871 the population was less than 1500. Both sides of my dad's maternal family tree lived side by side. They shared many interests and activities. I knew many of my ancestors were fishermen, builders, and stonemasons. I now know that Golfing was legitimate employment for my ancestors.

rowers and paddleboarders enthusiastically float
around waters which are rich in wildlife." 2

It seems paddling is in my blood!
