 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2024: Week 25 (STORYTELLER)

When I was in grade seven I won an essay contest writing about the fire that burned our school when I was in grade five. 

When my teacher told me I had won she mentioned the judges had said I was a very good storyteller. 

For a hot minute I wondered about being an author for my career. 

All these years later I still weave a tale, but my audiences aren't always delighted with the amount of detail and long-windedness those stories contain. 

As I watch their eyes glaze over I will hear my Polish neighbour's voice in my head -  'get to point'. 

Sometimes I follow her heed, but other times I just can't skip over what I view as important details. 

These are not the details my audience necessarily feels are important! 

I need to learn the art of short story writing where not one extra word/detail is included.

In thinking about Storyteller I decided to write about an author that is in this Bramble Bush. 

I used WikiTree and Famous Kin to discover an author connected. 

I read the list of of Famous Kin for my 10th great grandparents, Thomas & Elizabeth (nee Charde) Ford for an author that intrigued me. 

I found my 8th cousin X3 removed, Erle Stanley Gardner

Erle was the author of the Perry Mason series.

nearly 100 detective and mystery novels that sold more than
1,000,000 copies each, making him easily the best-selling

Although no longer in first runs during my childhood the re-runs must have been popular because I remember the theme song very well!

When you hear or see something that immediately takes you back to childhood!!!

Ford Strong ~ Remembering Those Gone Too Soon

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2023: Week 33 (STRENGTH)

Long before the Ford Company began in 1903 my 2nd cousin X9 removed, FORD STRONG, was born.

He died at only 2 months old.

Many years later Ford would use the slogan

I had misremembered the slogan as BUILT FORD STRONG when I saw the name of my 2nd cousin X9 removed recently and decided to write about him this week. 

Ford was born on September 2nd 1668, and died on November 1st 1668. He was born & died in Northampton, Massachusetts, USA.

The death of an infant is sad.

I can't imagine it was any less sad in a time when infant mortality was so high. 

Infants who die leave no one behind to search for them, to remember them, or to honour them.  

It is this reason that I frequently write about my distant cousins who died as infants.

I am fairly confident it is why genealogy researchers often save an image for a baby born still or died as infants. 

We want to remember all of our relatives.

When listening to the audiobook "The Winthrop Woman" (my husband's 10th great grandmother) there were many mentions of the folks connected in this area of our Bramble Bush. I loved hearing mention of my family members alongside Chris'

O U T C A S T ~ When the Letters Make a Family

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2023: Week 7 (OUTCAST)

We have just returned from Ontario where we attended a funeral for my husband's grandfather & a graveside memorial to inter his father's ashes.

His Grandfather died January 29th at the age of 96. His father died February 6th 2021 at the age of 74. His dad's death occurred in Mexico hence the delay in interment. 

It was a very emotional 3 nights & 4 days with extended family. 

Shared grief is an amazing thing. 

The attachment & bonding that occurred this week left me reluctant to focus on anything to do with distance, estrangement, or outcasts.

Instead I decided to use the letters as my guide to feature family names I may not have written about previously using the letters O U T C A S T 

Looking at out Bramble Bush I was intrigued to find a grandmother for each of the letters except U, and then I discovered UNKNOWN. 

I now had a grandmother via the same family line for each letter. 

It's often easy to overlook the maiden name for the females in our trees when focusing on direct lines. 

I was surprised to realize how many grandmother's belong to one family line - specifically the Bayes/Merrill line is this week's focus.

I decided it's time to focus on my grandmothers & their family names.

Harry, Meghan, and I ~ Joined Together

Big family news -- I am related to both

Meghan Markle & Prince Harry

Meghan Markle is my 10th cousin via her father's maternal line, and my mother's maternal line.

What is super interesting in that both of these lines join together at my 3rd great grandmother Artemissa Merrill who married Solomon Bayes. Meghan & Harry are both related to me through this line, but they are not related to each other through this line.

Meghan's Merrill connection marries into the line quite a bit below where Harry joins.

Their children are my double cousins.

I do feel that I should have been invited to special family events, but I am guessing that didn't happen since our connection is on both of their non-royal lines.

Haven't yet given up hope of being invited to future events!!!
