This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.

New Facts ~ Still a Brick Wall

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2022: Week 39 (NEW TO YOU)

New to me?

When I first started thinking about this prompt I had no idea what I would write about.

I decided to open our Bramble Bush & look at my brick wall lines.

As I was considering my father's paternal line I realized I hadn't gone back to look at anyone else's hints now that the 1926 prairie census was released.

When it was first released I searched page by page looking for the Pellack family name. I just couldn't wait until the transcripts were finished.

With excitement I found the family, and then thought 'now I wait for the 1931 to be released.

At no point did I think about the other members of the family that were still living in Saskatchewan that might be able to help me break down the wall.

This week I spent hours researching the family members that remained in the Saskatchewan area.

I looked at my dad's DNA matches again searching with the extended family last names.

In the end I have added lots more details, but the brick wall remains.

Going back to look at the NEW TO ME facts!!!

This is why I search -

Cause ...

High & Low ~ The Buchner Funnel

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2022: Week 38 (HIGH AND LOW)

This week I am going to write about a possible relative.

When I first heard about the Büchner Funnel I realized odds were very good that this Bramble Bush intertwines back to the inventor Ernst Wilhelm Büchner.

Additionally looking at the face shape, nose, hairline, and brow of Ernst & his father  (Wilhelm) - there is no doubt they are related

My husband's ancestors originated from Unnau, Germany. Ernst was born in Pfungstadt, Germany. The two areas are not that far apart.

I have looked at this area of the tree many times over the past few years blogging in an attempt to write about the family connection to the Büchner Funnel. I have been unsuccessful in finding where the two family lines come together.

I decided to write about the Büchner Funnel this week even though I have no idea if the inventor is a relative.

The shared name intrigues me.

I have used Büchner Funnels in chemistry experiments in the past, but never knew what they were called.

The reason I decided this week was the week to focus on the Büchner Funnel was the amusement when several months back I found an article about their usage in the marijuana industry. I have no idea whey the ad showed up on my social media since I am not a proponent. I do live in British Columbia where it is legal so maybe that is why.

Now that I have written about it I am confident I will begin receiving more and more ads targeting a topic I have zero interest in outside of Genealogy!

But regardless how the ad ended up on my feed I fully giggled when I thought about the HIGH being obvious, and the LOW for the inventor to have his product being used in the drug industry.

Then again - what a HIGH - that his invention is still in everyday use well over 100 years later.

When you search BUCHNER FUNNEL & MARIJUANA there are pages and pages to click. I have included 2 in Sources below, but not the original article that sparked my interest to share this topic in my blog since I couldn't find it.

Let me introduce you to the relative we have not yet found our connection to:

Ernst Wilhelm Büchner
Birth: 18 March 1850 in Pfungstadt, Germany
Death: 25 April 1925 in Darmstadt, Germany

He was the son of:
Wilhelm Büchner & Elisabeth Wilhelmina Frederik

He married first, his cousin: Mathilda Büchner
and second: Marie Ludovike Karoline von Ferber

Having every confidence we will find the connection between two family lines at some point in the future.

Still looking!!!

Exploring the Skies ~ Samuel Langley & the Wright Brothers

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2022: Week 36 (EXPLORATION)

The Wright Brothers are my 6th cousins 4x removed on my mother's maternal line.

Wilbur (Will) Wright
BIRTH 16 APR 1867 • Millville, Henry County, Indiana, USA
DEATH 30 MAY 1912 • Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio, USA
&
Orville (Orv) Wright
BIRTH 19 AUG 1871 • Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio, USA
DEATH 30 JAN 1948 • Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio, US

Also through this line is the man who almost beat them to flight, Samuel Pierpont Langley, my 7th cousin 4x removed

Samuel Pierpont Langley
BIRTH 22 AUG 1834 • Boston, Massachusetts, USA
DEATH 27 FEB 1906 • Aiken, South Carolina

I wonder if they knew they were 7th cousins working toward the same goal - FLIGHT.

Exploring the skies was the dream at the time.

Samuel Pierpont Langley had great ideas and plans, but he didn't successfully make it happen.

The Wright Brothers get credit for flight, but looking at the folks who were working toward this goal at the time it appears to me they didn't execute it alone.

For more information about Samuel Langley's contribution to flight check the sources below.

11th great grandparents ~ David & Magdallen (nee Stewart) Kinnier

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2022: Week 35 (FREE SPACE)

For this week's prompt, FREE SPACE, I decided to follow up on last week's timeline after noticing I didn't have the Thomson line back very far.

I began looking at the sources for the folks I did have in our Bramble Bush, and then adding details and folks to see how far I could go back.

I arrived to my 7th great grandfather:
Andrew Thomson
BIRTH 1706 • Pathhead, Scottland, Fifeshire, Scotland, United Kingdom
DEATH Scotland, Scotland, United Kingdom

The Thomson line in Scotland is difficult to ensure it is the right family member being added. This is as far back as I have made it for the Thomson line. The reason for my stop was an inability to ensure it was my Thomson line I was following given the common names.

In the past I would just give up there.

This time I decided to follow further back on the wives line.

Andrew's wife (my 7th great grandmother) was
Agnes Kennier
BIRTH 22 MAR 1710 • Pathhead, Fife, Scotland, UK
DEATH Scotland, UK

Tracking back on 7th great grandmother Agnes' line I was able to go back 4 more generations to my 11th great grandparents.

David Kinnier
BIRTH ABT. 1610 • Angus, Scotland, UK
DEATH Unknown
&
Magdallen Stewart
BIRTH ABT. 1610 • Scotland
DEATH Unknown

This is all of the information I currently have for my 11th great grandparents.

Noting X11 great grandfather David's birth place I decided to check out Angus, Scotland.

Scotland isn't a big country, but the travel distance between Angus & North Berwick where the Thomson family ended is great.

How they ended up in North Berwick is a mystery.

I have written about the tale of North Berwick to Canada in the past.
You can read more about that in these two previous blogs:
