52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2025: Week 18 (INSTITUTIONS)

Mirriam-Webster dictionary defines Institution as

"a: an established organization or corporation (such as a bank or university) especially of a public character financial institutions

b: a facility or establishment in which people (such as the sick or needy) live and receive care typically in a confined setting and often without individual consent … the testator disinherited her siblings over their efforts to have her committed to a mental institution in the wake of several suicide attempts.—William M. McGovern, Jr. 

c: a significant practice, relationship, or organization in a society or culture the institution of marriage also : something or someone firmly associated with a place or thing she has become an institution in the theater"  1 

 In reading the definition I immediately thought about focusing on marriage. 

I then began searching through the marriage records I had for further back in our tree, and found my 5th great grandparents on my paternal grandmother's paternal line.

My 5th great grandparents:
John Thomson
Birth JUL 1763 • Seggie, Orwell, Kinross, Scotland
Death BEF. 1829 • Scotland, United Kingdom
and
Jean Beveridge
Birth OCTOBER 1765 • Portmoak, Kinross-shire, Scotland, United Kingdom
Death Unknown

They were married on December 21st 1787 in Orwell, Kinross, Scotland.

As I looked at the registry I took a moment - 237 years has passed, and this record provides proof of my 5th great grandparents marriage. 

It offers little insight into who they were as people.

In Scotland these names are common so I have had little success in searching for more details.

I have found quite a bit of information on their son, Thomas Thomson (my 4th great grandfather). He was a fisherman residing in Buckhaven. 

The Thomson family stayed in that location - my grandmother was born in North Berwick.

This is my primary reason for searching & blogging - to breath life into the people who came before me.

Recently Family Search sent out an email about connections to folks with multiple marriages.

Connecting to this Bramble Bush is Glynn (Scotty) Wolfe.

Glynn “Scotty” Wolfe did one thing in life and did it often. He married. In his 89 years, he married 29 times, setting the world record for monogamous unions. He married teenagers and grandmothers, farm girls and drug addicts, virgins and prostitutes, preachers and thieves, taking and shedding partners as casually as a square dancer.

He married some women for years, others for months, a few for days, and he loved, honored and cherished each one in his own odd way.

Marriage was his life’s work, his mission, his lasting monument. But when he died penniless last month at a Redlands nursing home, the body with the symbolic forearm tattoo of a tied knot went unclaimed. The man whose family tree sent branches and sub-branches in every direction, the man who married more often than Zsa Zsa Gabor, Elizabeth Taylor and Henry VIII combined, the man who made 29 different till-death-do-us-part promises, was singularly alone at the end."    1 

How exactly is Scotty connected to our Bramble Bush?

Glynn's 2nd cousin 6x removed was the 1st wife of Josiah Hunt 
Chris's 1st cousin 5x removed was the 2nd wife of Josiah Hunt
Both through their mother's paternal lines.

Given he is the most married man it seems fitting to feature him for this week's prompt Love and Marriage.

29 marriages - 

The list of his wives is so long that they barely fit in this blog post.

The World’s Most Married Man! Rev. Glynn “Scotty” Wolfe (1908-1997)

Pastor Mark Adams from the Redland Baptist Church used his story as part of his sermon on marriage:

"Mr. Wolfe’s situation was unique though—because he was no ordinary man. In fact, he held a very special world record. You see he is listed in the Guinness Book as the Most Married Man, with 29 monogamous marriages to his credit. 29 times Glynn Wolfe was asked, “Do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife…forsaking all others do you pledge yourself only to her, so long as you both shall live?” Twenty-nine times Glynn Wolfe replied, “I do,” but it never quite worked out that way. His longest marriage lasted seven years and his shortest only 19 days.

It is said that he left behind several children, grand-children, great grand-children, and of course a number of living ex-wives, and innumerable ex-in-laws—but still, Glynn died alone.You would think that, after all the income Glynn sent his way, at least his divorce lawyer would have come to the service!

I share this tragic story—because I think it’s indicative of the tragic state of the institution of marriage in our culture. As I said a few weeks back, marriage statistics don’t look very good these days. Believe it or not—they look even worse than the stock market! We live in a nation where over 60% of new marriages end in divorce—and Christian marriages seem to be failing at an even higher rate than those of non-Christians. Unless things don’t change, Mr. Wolf won’t hold his record for very long."    2

Glynn (Scotty) Wolfe was said to be Reverend with the Baptist Church. 

I was unable to find what church he had been associated with. 

All the searches I did turned up his wives & not anything about his working life. 

This is the only thing I could find that was even remotely connected to a faith based agency.

"Wolfe, a Bible-thumping minister who preached out of a trailer, was a relentless seeker of publicity."   3

The story of 31 wives seemed intriguing - almost amusing.

BUT then I looked more closely and discovered many of his brides had been young & vulnerable. 

It appears that Mr. Wolfe may have been a predator....

"Wolfe took brides as young as 14, divorcing them before they hit their 20th birthday. Commenting on his teen brides, Wolfe once said he liked to "marry them young and train them the way you want." "   4

This amusing tale had taken a dark turn, and I pondered not writing about him to avoid adding to his notoriety.

I decided that since I I found nothing in my search that suggested Mr. Wolfe was anything but a misunderstood man seeking love & attention my questioning that would be a welcome addition to those seeking.

Then again - I have 2 followers and a handful of readers. 

My primary audience is ME as a record of what I spend my time and money on.

When you find a distasteful relative, and you share it anyway!!!

To All the Cats I Have Loved Before - Herbie, Morris, Mo, Einstein, Tiki, Charlie, Oliver, Frodo, Simba

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2023: Week 18 (PETS)

I have frequently written about the pets in our family so wasn't sure what to write about for this week's prompt PETS.

My husband and I have agreed we are downsizing through attrition in anticipation of retirement. When a pet dies we will not get a new one. If I could have only one -- a cat or a dog -- I would choose cat. If Chris could have only one -- a dog or a cat -- he would choose dog. We have compromised by having multiples of each over the 30+ years we have been together.

Since we became a cat-free home I have realized that I am allergic to cats. My head is so much clearer. I am also allergic to dogs since my symptoms are  not fully gone. I don't know if I have always been allergic to dogs & cats since I have always lived with them so didn't know any different.

When I looked at our 23&Me results for dog and cat allergies we both have typical likelihood. BUT Chris' is in the very low area of the typical and mine is at the top. It seems our plan to head into retirement pet free is a good one for my health, but my heart is struggling with the decision. 

In considering the subject of this week's blog I decided to write about 'all the cats I have loved before'. 

Sadly I don't remember the first cat I had. I don't remember if it was a boy or girl. I don't remember it's name. I don't remember what it looked like.  BUT I know I was only a few months old when I got my first cat since my mom told me that she explained to my dad that every child should have a pet so they got me a cat. When my dad was transferred from Quebec to Alberta they found a new home for my cat. 

When we arrived to the military base in Edmonton our neighbour's cat had kittens. I wore my parents down, and they let me choose the one I wanted. To be honest I think we chose each other. He was a white short haired kitten with blue eyes. My mom wanted me to name him snowball, but I was adamant his name was Herbie. Herbie was a tough cat in the neighbourhood. He was a scrapper, and didn't like anyone except me. As soon as I got home from school he didn't leave my side. I carried him everywhere, and he slept on my pillow. 

I have no photos of Herbie because my parents divorced when I was 8. Family breakdown resulted in the loss of my father on a daily basis & on the artifacts of our life pre-divorce. When my mother left my father (who was in the military & away on maneuvers) Herbie was given away to a new home. I will never forget Herbie. I felt his loss deeply. 

Our next cat was a long haired beauty named Morris that my step-dad found while canoe racing in a neighbouring town in Ontario when I was 9. To this day I'm not sure he was actually a lost stray cat that dad found or if he was a friendly cat wandering his neighbourhood that dad decided to bring home to me after listening to my sad tales of the lost white cat I loved. Morris was a beautiful cat who refused to live outside or in the barn as my dad intended. He made it known he was a pampered house cat, and chose my room as his personal space. He chose me as his human. A few months later my 6 year old brother came downstairs yelling that Oscar was pooing mice in my drawer.  Morris became Morrisina - the proud mother of 4 beautiful kittens.Morris was given to the family who moved into the farm house when we moved back to British Columbia. I have no photos of Morris aka Morrisina.

At our new house we adopted a 1 year old purebread chocolate point siamese cat named Mo. He was part of a litter that was named Eeny, Meeny, Miny, and Mo - our Mo was the 4th born in his litter. Mo had been declawed by his previous owner. At some point one of those claws grew back,, and he shredded furniture with that one claw. This was the first cat that moved with us. He moved with the family back and forth across Canada, and lived to a ripe old age of 19. Mo and I remained attached even after I moved away from home - he would sleep with me whenever I spent the night. When I first moved out of the house I moved into a basement suite that allowed me to have a cat or small dog, but I worked long hours and hadn't made the decision to get one on my own.

My younger brother was about 8 when he brought a small grey kitten (in a tiny cardboard box) home with him on the school bus telling my parents he adopted it. After about a week my mom asked if I would take the cat because Mo was being mean to the kitten. When this tiny ball of grey and white fluff was dropped off to me I was smitten. I named him Einstein because I thought he looked wise. He and I quickly became family who were inseparable. 

He loved human food - lasagna was his favourite. When the movie Roxanne was filming in Nelson Einstein & I lived next door to the firehall. If you watch the movie carefully you can seen a small adorable grey cat walk through one of the scenes. The movie folks didn't think he was that cute, and asked me to keep him in the house during filming. Sadly Einstein couldn't accommodate them. He was about 4 when he was hit by a car, and the vet couldn't save him. 

After about a year without a cat I decided to adopt one from the SPCA in Vancouver. I had never been in an SPCA, and all the cats looking for homes broke my heart. How could I choose one?  There in the middle was a tabby cat using the litterbox. After Einstein's death I had decided an indoor cat was for me. This cat clearly knew how to use a litter box so my decision was made. I filled out the paperwork to adopt Seco, but the description didn't match the cat and he had long lost the paper collar that had his details on them so they made their best guess. 

Over the years his name evolved to Tiki. On the few times he ventured outside he would dash back into the house to use the litterbox - he never did learn the outside world was a big litterbox. We never did know how old he was when I adopted him, but the vet guessed 3 making him minimally 16 years old when he died. 

While out at a park a few years later there was a black and white tuxedo cat who was limping, meowing, and immediately heading my direction. He sat down at my feet looking adoringly at me. The folks that were there said he had been limping around the neighbourhood for about a week, and no one owned him. I took him the the SPCA after my companion pointed out there might be a little girl crying for her lost cat. I told the SPCA that if he didn't get claimed I wanted to adopt him. They reassured me they would get the vet to check his leg. 10 days later the SPCA called me saying he hadn't been claimed, and asking if I wanted to adopt him. I headed off to pick up my cat who I named Charlie. When the SPCA said they hadn't had the vet look at the leg, but it seemed to be getting better, I was upset - he was still clearly in pain, and it wasn't better. Immediately to the vet we went receiving the bad news that his hip was dislocated, but due to the length of time that had passed it no longer could be re-located. He was put on $100 a bag growth kitten food to assist with healing the joint to make it functional. He also let me know Charlie was about 5 months old. Charlie's hip healed enough to minimally impact him until arthritis set in when he was older. He was 12 years old when he died of a heart attack laying in the sun on the back deck. I was Charlie's human - he slept with me every night (often on my head).

On a morning between meetings I was dropping our older son off at a summer recreational program when I noticed a box with a kitten in it that said 'free kitty last day'. A lady I knew asked if I wanted a kitten. I said we had 2 older cats so really didn't need a kitten. She said 'too bad because if he doesn't get a home today he's going in the river tomorrow'. I stood and looked at her for an awkward few minutes and then said 'give me my damn cat we're going home'. I was late for me next meeting because I had to deliver him home. When I walked in with him sitting on my shoulder our younger son was ecstatic, but my husband not so much. He was named Oliver for the boys' favourite movie - Oliver & Company. We were a 3 cat household for only a few month when Tiki died. I was Oliver's human - he slept with me every night. After Charlie died Oliver began sleeping on my head. Oliver died at 18 1/2 years old. 

We were a 1 cat household for about 3 years when we rescued sisters Simba & Frodo who were abandoned in the Christina Lake laundromat. You can read more about them here: The Rainbow Bridge ~ Saying Goodbye to Furry Family Members. Frodo's name was chosen for her furry toes, and Simba because she looked liked a baby lion. Frodo died at 14, and Simba at 19. 

Remembering the cats I have loved before reminds me that I really do love having a feline family member. I also realize our cats live very long lives, and are not a commitment to take on lightly. Added to my realization that I have allergies it does seem that heading into retirement as a cat-free home is for the best.

Buckner, Missouri, USA ~ Where Exactly Did the Name Come From

This week's prompt is social 
"Maybe you have a story or photo of an ancestor at an ice cream social. Maybe your ancestor was part of a society, like the Masons or Odd Fellows. Maybe you've made a connection with a cousin or made a great discovery thanks to social media." Amy Johnson Crow 1  

I remembered that my husband's side of this Bramble Bush has Masons, and headed to Google to search. 

My search term was buchner free mason

The first result was

This led me to discover Buckner, Missouri, USA

There is some debate to how the town got it's name

"Buckner was established in 1875. In its inception Buckner was a railroad depot town for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. Where Buckner derives its name from is a point of contention; the town is either named from former US Senator Alexander Buckner (1830-1833) who served on the States Constitutional Convention in 1820, or named after Real Estate operator Simon Buckner. Yet another claim as namesake is Thomas W. Buckner, an original owner of the site."2

Looking for more information for the 3 men I found this about
Thomas W. Buckner:
"Jackson County Photo Taken on August 16, 2019 The town was laid out by Thomas Monroe, in the spring of 1875 on land owned by Thomas W. Buckner, whose land extended up and over a high hill immediately south and adjoining the site. The hill had long been known as Buckner Hill and the town was given that name. Later by a town ordinance the Hill was dropped. The first house built on the present site of Buckner was by John T. Cobb, in which he kept a general country store. A post offices [sic] was established here in 1876 and is still in operation." 3

I found nothing for Real Estate Operator Simon Buckner.

I found lots for Senator Alexander Buckner. Following the Senators Family line back I was not able to go back to 'the old country' so I can't be sure if this line is from the same area as my husband's Buchner line from Unnau, Westerwald, Hessen, Germany. I did find Senator Buckner on Wikipedia. Using Relationship finder I discovered he is 21 degrees from my husband via his mother's line & not the expected Buchner line.

I always thought all Buchners, Boughners, Buckners, and any other variation of spelling were related - it seems that may not be true.

At this time there is no known connection between any of the three men and my husband's family line, but that may change in the future.

When the Crime & Punishment are self imposed ~ Sometimes Your Best Is Not Required

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 18 (CRIME & PUNISHMENT)

This is my third year with the 52 Ancestors challenge, and this week's late blog is the first time that has happened in the 3 years. 

I considered skipping this week entirely because I know it's not a CRIME to do so, but then realized I don't have to get too complicated. The challenge is 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks. 

Life got very complicated about a week and a half ago. Researching in depth won't be  possible for  a while. 

BUT there is no CRIME & PUNISHMENT for not creating in depth blogs for this challenge. 

The only expectations I am not meeting are my own, and there is no shame in that. 

As a parent of Type A children I taught them  young that 'sometimes your best is not required just get the damn thing done'. Over the next few weeks I will be taking my own advice.

My Ancestor I present for week 18 wasn't involve in any crime to the best of my knowledge.  

The crime really is that I haven't followed this line up too far.

That is all I know about Samantha Burtch prior to her marriage. 

To be a bit dramatic .... that is a crime. In the years I have been researching both sides of the Bramble Bush somehow I missed X2 Great Grandma Samantha. 

Samantha & Alexander had 9 children that I have found records for.
My husband's great grandfather was their youngest.

In looking for someone to write about it's easy to notice where research is still needed. 

With DNA matches confirmed through 3 of the children there is no doubt what has been researched so far is accurate, but going further up this line is definitely needed.

Gentle Riding Beast and a Side Saddle ~ John Buchner's Will

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 18 (WHERE THERE'S A WILL)


There is no part of our Bramble Bush that has more originally sourced records than the Buchner line. 


When I decided that I wanted to feature an authentic will for this weeks blog I chose my husband's X5 great grandfather John Buchner.


If you are asking yourself if you just heard about John -  you aren't wrong.
Johannes Theis (John) Buchner has made an appearance two weeks in a row. 
It seems I have changed my own rules! 


Johannes Theis Buchner, who was known as John. He was born in Unnau, Westerwald, Hessen, Germany. He died in Hardwick, Sussex, New Jersey, United States. 


John's wife was Catharine who was born about 1730 somewhere in Germany, and died in New Jersey, USA at some point. That is all we know about X5 great grandmother Catharine. 


I have found very little sourced information for her. It's possible her maiden name was Mueller, but that isn't sourced adequately even though it's rampant on Ancestry and other web based genealogy sites. 


The only real proof I find of Catharine's existence is in John's will.

Below you will find the same will in what I believe is it's original spelling and writing style. 


I have failed as a researcher. 


I saved the document below to my ancestry tree back in January. I found it originally via another who saved it in 2013 to their Ancestry tree.


The original source is unknown at this time. 


"In the Name of God Amen I John Buchner of the County of Sussex, Township of Hardwick and State of New Jersey...do Constitute and order this my Last will and Testament...I give to my Dear and Loving wife Catharine Bucher Her (Dict) and Apparels in as Decent a Manner as She Requires Likewise one Good and Gentle Riding Beast and Side Saddle two Good milks Cows he Bed and agreable Bedding of Covering to ot Six pounds of Woll and a Good agreeable (Bd)room in the House on the Premises one Iron pott one Large Brass Kittle one Chest for (uses) and I give to my Ten Children now Living or to their heirs The (Real) and Remaining Part of my Estate to be Equally Dividied, Namely Philip Mary Margaret John Henry Jacob Christopher Daniel Frederick and Peter Buchner allowing Such Sums as have been paid unto any of them to be Deducted out of their part of Divided unless it be one Good Milk Cow (Her) Bed Bed and Bedding one Heifer Cow one Good Hunting Side Saddle to be Given to my Daughter Mary which is Not to be taken our of her Dividend one Bay Horse Colt which John Claims to be his property Likewise one Brown Mare and Colt which Federick Claims to be his property the choice of Two Colts now Living (and my) Property to be Peters and the other Daniels which is Not to be(deducted) of their Dividend Likewise Sex pounds (Good) money to be paid to my Son Cristopher and Six Pounds of Like Currency to be paid to my Grand Son John Son of Philip Buchner and if the Child Lives they Shall as Soon as Convenient after the Sale of the (place ) buy or purchase with the Sd. Six pounds one Mare Colt for the use and property of the Sd. boy...and Lastly I constitute and appoint My True and Trusty Sons Philip Buchner John Buchner and Christopher Buchner Executors of this my Last Will and Testament and Trustees for my wife and Children in Witness whereof I have hereunto settmy hand and Seal this Eleventh Day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand and Seven hundred and Ninety one 1791..."


Even if we don't know it's original source it does make an interesting read. The details in the summarized are the same - just a little less flowery. 


It was this document that I was able to add more members to our Bramble Bush. Now that I have them in our tree I will be able to source the documents to back it up. For now the details in my tree are noted as unsourced, but not in question. 


Wills and obituaries have a wealth of information just waiting to be mined.
