This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.
You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family you know!

When ThruLines Gives You An Idea ~ Bayes & Dendy Connected?

  52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2025: Week 17 (DNA)

When I first started searching our family history it didn't take me long to realize DNA would be needed to sort out my father's paternal line.

In doing DNA for that purpose many other details became clear.

BUT DNA testing has also created some confusion.

Added to the challenge of sorting how a match is connected to our Bramble Bush are errors in the trees of our matches.

This week I decided to look at ThruLines to see if there was anything new since I last looked at them.

I discovered something that made me look closer....
My maternal grandmother's maternal line, Dendy, has a potential connection to her paternal line, Bayes.

My great grandparents
Earnest (Ernest) Helmer (Elmer) (Hap) (Ernie) Bayes
Birth 17 JUL 1903 • Campbellford, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada
Death 19 OCT 1986 • Nelson, British Columbia, Canada
&
Rose Honor Dendy
Birth 14 APR 1906 • R.M. of Pipestone, Bardal, Manitoba, Canada
Death 17 SEP 1974 • Nelson, British Columbia, Canada

The Bayes Family: Rose, Hap, Amy, Fred

The Bayes Family: Rose, Hap, Amy, Fred

The Bayes Family: Rose, Hap, Amy, Fred

If ThruLines is to be believed Grandma's 4th great grandmother on her Dendy maternal line was Ann Bayes.

Since ThruLines on Ancestry can't be taken as fact I began searching for documents that I was not able to find.

A GedMatch check says grandma's parents aren't related:

I was unable to find any proof of the Bayes connection through her Dendy line, but with my curiosity now peaked the search continues.

Remembering that ThruLines can't be trusted, but they can provide ideas!!!

This is why I search -

World War 2 Soldiers ~ Pellack Cousins

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2024: Week 17 (WAR)

The book Our Courageous Pioneers : History of Gronlid and Surrounding Districts of Argus, Athol, Edenbridge, Freedom, Maryville, Murphy Creek, Sandhill Creek, Taelman, Taras, Teddington, was published in 1991, and included the photo below of my grandfather in his uniform..

It's in the World War 2 section of the book.
It also includes his cousin Jack.

He is wearing the same uniform in the photo below (taken 1940) with my grandmother.

If Grandma is to be believed -

The man she met in about 1939 (in Calgary, Alberta, Canada)  was Clyde Robertson. It wasn't until the early 60s that she found out he was also Max Pellack.

In 2002 I found the Pellack family via a random message on an Ancestry discussion thread. After I messaged them they were able to confirm that the Pellack family knew Max had been using the name Clyde Robertson at various times in his life.

They also shared that they had lost contact with Max/Clyde so hadn't been aware of his family details.

In collaboration we managed to add our line to their tree. I was finally able to add relatives on my paternal grandfather's side of this Bramble Bush.

In looking at the timelines we had a missing 10 years between him leaving home as Max Pellack and meeting Grandma as Clyde Robertson.

According to the family they lost touch with him after he left home in about 1930 until he returned in about 1961.

You can read more about that time in an earlier blog
Max Pellack ~ I'm Not a Diamond Heiress with a Tiny Flluuuffy Dog in a Sparkly Flllluuufffy Handbag!

I have narrowed the missing 10 years some, but there are still 8 years in question.

A BIGGER question is exactly how the family had this photo of Grandpa in his abt. 1940 military uniform when he was apparently not in communication with his family of origin.

When a photo leaves more questions that answers!!!

DNA Results ~ 100% European

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2023: Week 17 (DNA)

This week I went back and looked more closely at my 23&Me Ancestry Composition that were recently updated.

I found the results interesting.

100% European, but some areas aren't precisely known.

This left me wondering exactly how they know, and if the results can be trusted.

23&Me has a tab titled Scientific on every section of the results they provide.

After reading the reference dataset information in the scientific details section I feel more confident about the results.

The unknown areas will likely have more specific details in the future when more folks test.

Waiting anxiously for the updates!!!

Marriage Document ~ Leads to Salem Witch Trials

Growing up I can't remember ever hearing about any ancestors past my great grandparents. I don't think I ever really thought about the direct line back.

This week I found the marriage documents of my husband's 8th great grandparents.

Joseph S Lemon
BIRTH 26 JUN 1692 • Charlestown, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA
DEATH 1750 • Massachusetts, United States
&
Elizabeth Phillips
BIRTH 23 AUG 1692 • Charlestown, Suffolk, Massachusetts, USA
DEATH 1775 • Massachusetts, USA

This is one of the several lines he (and therby our children) can lay claim to their United Empire Loyalists (UEL) family history. We have not submitted the necessary documentation to verify  their ancestors. If we did they could receive a Certificate of Lineal Descent, and use UE after their name

***If you want more information about this check sources below***

Chris' 8th great grandparents were both born 330 years ago in 1692. As I considered this I realized I can't even imagine what life looked like at the time.

They were born in Charleston, a neighbourhood of Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The Salem Witch Trials were occurring during this time.

"Boston was founded in 1630. In 1692, many people involved in the witchcraft delusion lived here, including judges, ministers, accusers, accused, and skeptics." 1

Both of his 8th great grandparents were infants when

"In January of 1692, nine-year-old Betty Parris and eleven-year-old  Abigail Williams, the daughter and niece of Salem Village minister Reverend Samuel Parris, suddenly feel ill. Making strange, foreign sounds, huddling under furniture, and clutching their heads, the girls’ symptoms were alarming and astounding to their parents and neighbors. When neither prayer nor medicine succeeded in alleviating the girls’ agony, the worried parents turned to the only other explanation; the children were suffering from the effects of witchcraft. As word of the illness spread throughout Salem Village, and eventually Essex County, others began to fall ill with the same alarming symptoms. The afflicted complained disembodied spirits were stabbing them, choking them, and jabbing them with pins. Soon names were cried out as the afflicted began to identify these specters. Neighbors, acquaintances, and total strangers were named in the statements and examinations that followed. Gossip and stories from decades prior were dredged up as fear continued to spread. Over the course of the year 1692, between 150-200 people were jailed for witchcraft. Ultimately, 14 women and 5 men were hanged, one man was tortured to death, and at least give (sic) people perished in prison. This was the largest series of witchcraft trials to ever take place in North America, and would be the last large-scale witch panic to take place in the English colonies." 2

We have watched many shows & read many books about the Salem Witch trials, and never knew we had family connections.

Trying to understand the world your ancestors lived in!!!

My Favourite Place ~ Safe at Home

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 17 (FAVOURITE PLACE)

In early February 2020 we went to Costa Rica, and enjoyed a beautiful week and a half in a lovely all inclusive resort on the Gulf of Papagayo. For the flight over we were careful to use hand sanitizer often. When we completed Customs returning to Canada we were asked if we had any cold symptoms or had been to China.

It wasn't too long after our arrival home that things got serious.

When the Worldwide Covid-19 Pandemic resulted in 'stay home' orders in March of 2020 most of us believed we just needed 3 weeks to flatten the curve.

It would be 2 months of working from home before the library I work in reopened for curbside pick up. A further 3 months before a limited number of customers were allowed inside the building.

As the pandemic case counts continued to grow over 2020 we all began looking forward to 2021 believing the pandemic would be over, and life would go back to normal.

I remember how hard I laughed when I saw the meme suggesting 2020 could be a trailer for 2021.

I am no longer laughing.

The world is no longer laughing.

2021 has resulted in new 'stay home' orders throughout the world.

Canada stopped all incoming flights from India & Pakistan last week. Passengers who arrive via flights from anywhere into Canada must quarantine in a hotel until their Covid test returns negative. All of the Canadian provinces have some level of restrictions in place.

My province, British Columbia, has ordered all restaurants to offer delivery and takeout only. Customers may only eat on the premises if they have a patio. They have divided our province into three regions, and no travel is permitted across these regions for non-essential purposes. No indoor church services or gatherings. Mandatory mask wearing in all businesses.

These restrictions are not small, but in considering the worldwide needs of the many they are not overdone. The health restrictions have been established to protect us.

While greeting people to enter my workplace one of the questions we ask is if they have been a close contact to a known case over the past 2 weeks.  A year ago the answer was often that they didn't know anyone who had gotten it. Starting about a month or so ago I began hearing several times a day about the friends & family they know who have gotten Covid. I have even had a few share that someone they were close to died from Covid complications. We have had a few cases in our friends & family circle, and feel blessed that none have been sick enough to require hospitalization.

My husband and I continue to front face the public everyday at work. We have both had our first vaccines. He had Pfizer in February as part of the healthcare worker rollout. I had AstraZeneca last week when Canada lowered the age restriction. I chose to take the first vaccine offered, and not vaccine shop.

The case counts worldwide are climbing at a faster pace than 2020. The original Covid-19 virus has mutated, and created variants that are more contagious & virulent.

It appears as though 2020 really was a trailer of 2021.

The idea of making a joke about 2021 being a trailer of 2022 is not even a little amusing.

Thinking about the possibility of a third year of a Covid Pandemic is completely outside my current ability to imagine.

Right now in 2021 my FAVOURITE PLACE is HOME.

When I am at home I can forget there is a worldwide pandemic going on.

The moment I leave the house I am forced to see that there is a pandemic still going on. If anything it feels more serious now in May 2021 than it did in May 2020. Maybe only because of the fatigue after dealing with it all for a year already.

The real estate market in our neighbourhood clearly shows that not everyone has their own little hideaway place to call home.
I feel blessed that we do!

A Pandemic is the perfect time to reflect on where exactly my FAVOURITE PLACE is ...

SAFE AT HOME!!!!

Stay home - for you & your fellow humans!

Rooted to the Land ~ Germany to Canada

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 17 (LAND)

My husband's family is solidly rooted to the land in Southern Ontario. Much of the land was originally granted for loyalty to Britain. His family is spread all across Ontario with some still living on their original land grant.

There is much history attached to the Buchner name.

My husband shares a name with a X5 great uncle whose home is a historical site in the Niagara Falls area.

"The property was part of a larger holding purchased by Christopher Buchner
from his father-in-law, James Forsyth, in 1799. The lands were central to the
fighting of the Battle of Lundy's Lane on July 25, 1814. A house belonging to
Christopher and Sarah Buchner on the southwest slope of Drummond Hill was
noted in military papers which recorded the battle proceedings. Christopher
Buchner was a lieutenant in the 2nd Lincoln Militia and was standing, with his son John, only a few hundred yards from his house when the first skirmishes began. The extent of the damage, if any, which the house sustained during the battle is unknown." 1

When I first got married I don't remember who told me: 'if you aren't born to or married to a Buchner - not to worry you will be related to Buchners before you die', but they were right. As I navigate across the Buchner side of the Bramble Bush I have discovered that the statement was funny because it was true. I spend a lot of time untangling the wraparound vines. The intertwining requires careful consideration before adding a new person to this side of the bramble bush.

In Ontario many Buchners are still farmers or lease their land to other farmers. Many run businesses from the land descendants still own. When searching for Buchners alternative spellings Boughner & Buckner will result  in long lists of folks and businesses throughout North America.

Long before the battle of 1812 my husband's ancestors called Unnau, Germany home.

Red is the village Unnau
Source: Google Maps

"All genealogies begin with the German ancestor Merten Buchner (died 1694) who lived in Unnau, a village in the province of Nassau-Dillenburg. This is located in the northernmost part of the Westerwald Region of the present state of Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany and northeast of the city of Koblenz. The genealogy follows his family in the records of nearby Bad Marienberg Evangelical Church. Merten’s son Johan Bäst Buchner (baptized 1663) lived in Unnau, as did Merton’s grandson Johann Martin Buchner (baptized 1705), the immigrant ancestor to America.

Martin Buchner with his wife Elisabetha Maria Zehrüng and family emigrated to America on the snow Rowand landing in the Port of Philadelphia in 1753 then settled in Amwell Township, Morris (afterwards Sussex) County, New Jersey where Martin was a schoolmaster." 2

Johannes Martin (Martin) Buchner
BIRTH 29 JAN 1704 • Unnau, Nassau (now), Westerwald, Germany

DEATH 1780 • Sussex County, New Jersey, United States of America
and

Elsa Maria (Elizabeth) Zehrung
BIRTH 14 OCT 1704 • Fehl-Ritzhausen, (now Marienberg), Nassau, (now) Westerwald, Germany

DEATH 1780 • Amwell, Sussex, New Jersey, USA

Martin and Elizabeth (nee Zehrung) Buchner are my husband's 6th great grandparents through their son:
Johannes Theis (John) Buchner (my husband's 5th great grandfather)
BIRTH 18 SEP 1729 • Unnau, Westerwald, Hessen, Germany
DEATH 11 SEP 1791 • Hardwick Twp, Sussex, New Jersey, USA
and his wife Catherine (I have't been able to confirm details).

My husband's part of the bramble bush arrived in Ontario, Canada via his 4th great grandparents
**** and 5th great grandparents explained in another blog linked below ****

United Empire Loyalist (UEL)
Sergeant Jacob Buchner

BIRTH 31 MAY 1763 • Hardwick Twp., Sussex, New Jersey, USA
DEATH 11 AUG 1841 • Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Ontario
and
Catherine Shelar
BIRTH 20 SEP 1767 • Sussex County, New Jersey
DEATH 8 FEB 1855 • Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Ontario

I do not yet have a record of their arrival in Canada, but the first recorded child born in Canada was 1789.

My husband's 3rd great grandfather is their 7th child born in 1908.

Jacob Clasnor Buchner
BIRTH 20 APR 1803 • Woodhouse Twp, Norfolk County , Ontario, Canada
DEATH 29 JUN 1886 • Houghton Twp, Norfolk County , Ontario, Canada
married to
Amy Catherine Matthews
BIRTH ABT 1801 • Woodhouse, Ontario
DEATH 10 MAR 1880 • Cultus, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada
who was a widow of George Warwick when she married Jacob.

Their descendant works in healthcare, and finds peace rooted to the land.
