This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.

The American Revolution & War of 1812 ~ The Buchner Family Was There

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2024: Week 4 (WITNESS TO HISTORY)

"It appears that the oldest brother John Buchner, father of the teenaged “younger group” although advanced in years and continuously resident in New Jersey was also active in the Loyalist cause. His son Jacob referred to him as “John Boughner, Sr., U.E. Loyalist,” in his land petition. Jacob joined the New Jersey Volunteers in 1780 and served for the rest of the war as a sergeant and guide with the army. He “piloted” several persons from the enemy line to New York, where his regiment was stationed." 1

John Boughner noted above is my husband's 5th great grandfather via his father's paternal line, and his 6th great grandfather via his father's maternal line.

Johannes Theis (John) Buchner
BIRTH 18 SEP 1729 • Unnau, Westerwald, Hessen, Germany
DEATH 11 SEP 1791 • Hardwick Twp, Sussex, New Jersey, USA

John's son Jacob noted above is my husband's 4th great grandfather via his father's paternal line, and his 5th great grandfather via his father's maternal line. The family references him as Jacob the 1st.

Jacob Buchner
BIRTH 31 MAY 1763 • Hardwick Twp, Sussex County, New Jersey , USA
DEATH 11 AUG 1841 • Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada
married to
Catherine Schuyler (AKA: Shelar, Schuler, Shuler)
BIRTH 20 SEP 1767 • Sussex County, New Jersey, USA
DEATH 8 FEB 1855 • Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Ontario

X5 (X6) Great Grandpa John was a Loyalist during the American Revolution. He died before the War of 1812 started. Most of his brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews settled as loyalist in the southern Ontario regions. Many of the towns & roads carry their various names.

The battle of Lundy's lane took place on John's nephew's property. The Buchner House is a historic home that is still available to visit.

Future holiday plans?

Wouldn't it be exciting for a namesake to book the Buchner House via VRBO.

When looking at the family's history we are left wondering how pride in the United Empire Loyalists' roots fits with Truth & Reconciliation!!!

United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada (UELAC) ~ Jacob Buchner

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2023: Week 3 (OUT OF PLACE)

This is my 5th year with the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks Challenge.

When I signed up for the 2019 challenge I wasn't sure I would be able to follow through all year.

I would love to go back, and show my doubting self that I wouldn't miss even one week in the 4 years I have registered.

This week's prompt was OUT OF PLACE.

In 2018 & 2019 I attended the Finding Your Roots Conference in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

The workshop sessions were interesting & informative.

Each of the presenters were experts in their subjects.

Each of the sessions included handouts that were available digitally.

It was shocking that such an amazing event was free of charge.

The quality of this event is definitely worth paying for.

My 2018 sessions were:

  • Autosomal Tests and One Name Studies
  • Delve Into Twelve Unusual Sources for Your Eastern European Research
  • Google and Its Genealogy Tools
  • Use Advanced Techniques on FamilySearch to Discover Your Elusive Eastern European Ancestors
  • Welcome to RootsMagic

I was originally registered in an Intro to DNA, but left after about 15 minutes when I realized I was already beyond what was being taught.

I then went to the RootsMagic session which was handy since I was trying to decide which software to use after only having our Bramble Bush on the Ancestry website. As an added bonus the session offered a discount for purchasing RootsMagic. More than 4 years later I am still happy with the software - it fully meets my needs.

My 2019 sessions were:

  • Researching Your Military Relatives,
  • Canadiana: (The Website),
  • Scottish Records - Diving Deep into the FamilySearch Catalogue
  • Advanced Scotland- Sasines (Land Records)
  • Ancestry DNA ThruLines

This is an amazing conference with well known professional presenters.

The bagged lunch available for a small fee was fresh & delicious.

I can't recommend this conference enough.

Due to COVID the event didn't take place in 2020, 2021 or 2022.

I am hopeful 2023 will see a return to this fantastic resource.

Why exactly am I writing about his conference for out of place?

In 2018 I found these on a table in the Conference Hall.

There were booths selling things everywhere, but these treasures were on a table marked FREEBIES.

I was surprised to see them - they were definitely out of place since they are for the province of Ontario.

I know there were lots of folks who have ancestors from all over the world at this conference, but these felt like they had been dropped there for me!

The first one I picked up had my husband's X4 great grandfather on his father's paternal line (also his 5th great grandfather via his father's maternal line) listed on the Grand Jury.

 Jacob Buchner, Grand Jurer
1933 Archive, Page 56 and 57

I ended up leaving a few behind because I only took the ones that listed my husband's ancestors. In the years since I have added more ancestors who may have been in those books I left behind. I try to remember there were others at that conference who found their person in those I didn't take. We didn't need them all!

It was at this conference, in 2018, I first learned about the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada (UELAC).

I spoke with the folks from the local branch & they encouraged us to join because:

"Lord Dorchester’s Proclamation of 1789 states, in part…
“Those Loyalists who have adhered to the unity of the Empire, and joined the Royal Standard before the Treaty of Separation in the year 1783, and all their children and their descendants by either sex, are to be distinguished by the following capitals, affixed to their names: U.E. alluding to their great principle the unity of the Empire.” 1

This week I finally signed up for a family membership, and am engaged in conversation with the local branch's genealogist.

In looking at this history through my present lens  - I got to wondering how does using the U.E. designation fit with Colonialism?

Soon Chris will have the legal right to sign his name with U.E., but will he want to?

As someone whose roots are very shallow in Canada I have always been fascinated by the Loyalists.

Remembering world views have changed since I first began working on this Bramble Bush!!!

This is why I search -

Family Heirlooms ~ A Wooden Walking Stick

Recently we traveled across Canada to spend time with our children & extended family members.

On this trip my husband's grandfather gave him this family heirloom:

Close-ups -  bottom to top

The photos do not do it justice. This is an incredible piece of woodwork. It's carved from a solid piece of wood...
It's a BROKEN BRANCH fitting this week's theme.

Starting from the bottom the carvings tell the story of the Old Testament: Adam & Eve, Noah & the Ark, the 3 wise men following the Star of David to the manger, ending with the the Crucifixion of Jesus.
Or at least that is what we thought it was telling.

Between Noah & the animals disembarking and the arrival of the 3 wise men is a beaver & a turtle. We wondered if it was to represent the Indigenous Creation Story alongside the bible's. Alternatively they could represent Turtle Island (North America) & Canada.

Family lore suggests it might have been a talking stick used by missionaries.

On closer examination we aren't sure that it is telling the story of Old Testament from the bottom.

The first four symbols have people carrying objects that appear to be an axe, a sled, a rosary, and one unidentifiable. Then livestock, a small boat, and a person carrying nothing followed by the beaver & the turtle. Then a man holding 3 fish & a key. Then a square with 2 wedges on either side with a platform above. Then the 3 wise men following a star to a place with livestock with a baby in a manger. Then a family - 2 adults with 1 child. Then another animal that might be a squirrel or a salamander. Then 2 more people who may be fighting. Then the symbol of Jesus on the cross. Around the cross is tools: an axe, a square, a hammer, a saw, a pair of plyers, and a spear. Above all of the that is a rooster. Then a man and a woman holding hands. Then a leaf (or a tree or a plant) with a bird sitting at the top. From bottom to top encompassing the entire story is a snake.

Online searching resulted in our discovering it's a Folk Art Cane/Walking Stick.

***If you have any knowledge of this walking stick we would love to hear from you***

His grandfather remembers the walking stick being at his grandparents house when he was a child.

Mark Rearely & Anna Barbara (nee Walser) Buchner

Mark Rearely Buchner
BIRTH 24 FEB 1838 • Woodhouse Twp., Norfolk Co., ON, Canada
DEATH 12 JUN 1931 • Norfolk, Ontario, Canada
&
Anna Barbara (Barbara) Walser
BIRTH 13 APR 1860 • Teufen, Appensell, Switzerland
DEATH 1950 • Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada

Until the provenance can be established the origins before my husband's X3 great grandparents can't be known.

His grandfather told us that the family believed it originated 2 generations higher with
Jacob Buchner Sargeant, UEL
BIRTH 31 MAY 1763 • Hardwick Township, Sussex County, New Jersey , USA
DEATH 11 AUG 1841 • Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada
&
Catherine Shular (Sheelar)
BIRTH 20 SEP 1767 • Sussex County, New Jersey, USA
DEATH 8 FEB 1855 • Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Ontario

Folk Art Canes were typically from the Civil War to WW1 which put the X5 Great Grandpa Jacob tale a bit out of reach, but could fit for a generation below (X4 Great grandparents)
Jacob Clasnor Buchner
BIRTH 20 APR 1803 • Woodhouse Twp, Norfolk County , Ontario, Canada
DEATH 29 JUN 1886 • Houghton Twp, Norfolk County , Ontario, Canada
&
Amy Catherine Matthews
BIRTH ABT 1801 • Woodhouse, Ontario, Canada
DEATH 10 MAR 1880 • Cultus, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada

We do know the walking stick has been passed down to the oldest male of each generation starting with the children of Mark's second marriage.
This left us wondering if it was possible the walking stick originated with X3 great grandmother Anna Barbara Walser's family. Alternatively it may have been that she gave it to her oldest son vs. Mark's oldest son (from his 1st marriage). We aren't sure where it came from before X3 great grandparents Mark & Barbara (nee Walser) Buchner obtained it.

Grandfather to grandson happened this time because my father-in-law died last year. Our son is the oldest male of the next generation allowing the walking stick to continue 6 generations through the oldest male.

In today's world the practice of passing down father to son ignoring daughters seems old fashioned & unfair. Since we have 2 boys and no daughters we can follow the tradition without discrimination.

Treasures passed down the direct male line!!!

R. Robert Mutrie ~ A Credible Source

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 7 (UNUSUAL SOURCE)

In the years I have been searching for broken branches of our Bramble Bush there has been a few unusual sources, but the majority of my searching has been through very traditional sources.

In 2018 I attended a Genealogy Conference, and struck a jackpot find on the freebie table. There were Ontario Archives public record books that included my husband's 4th great grandfather in it. You can read about that find here:  |Jacob Buchner ~ A FRESH START in Canada

One of my early sources for the Buchner family line was
"R. Robert Mutrie, Norfolk County researcher, writer and publisher of more than four decades, is quite simply, "Mr. Long Point Settler.".
 "
1

Mr. Mutrie's writings and documentation has helped build our Bramble Bush. His information can be counted on to be accurate. I have read many of his writings, and quoted him as a source in many of my blog entries. Mr. Mutrie is a credible source.

This week's UNUSUAL SOURCE is that we recently found an Ancestry DNA match to a person who I suspect is Mr. Mutrie's wife. My husband shares 21 cM across 3 segments (Unweighted shared DNA: 34 cM, Longest segment: 19 cM) with her. The Predicted relationship is 4th–6th Cousin. My husband does not match Mr. Mutrie himself. His match is to an account managed by Mr. Mutrie hence I suspect his wife.

What makes this UNUSUAL is that it appears as though my husband is related on all 4 sides of his lineage. This unusual discovery was made when looking at the shared matches. This unusual discovery resulted in the creation of a new DNA profile picture:

The DNA match is small. The value of the match is in the shared matches. As I have found many times in searching my husband's side of the Bramble Bush the lines intersect so often that it makes it very hard to determine the exact relationship.

The best part about this unusual discovery is knowing the research that has gone into our Bramble Bush is correct. R. Robert Mutrie is a credible source in the Ontario Genealogy community. Our Bramble Bush matches the tree I found on Ancestry. It is a great feeling when credible sources confirm your research.

When your family has such long roots to the area that all 4 sides of your lineage are interconnected!

This is why I search -

Cause ...

Family Legend ~ Buchner Family's United Empire Loyalists History

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 2 (FAMILY LEGEND)

I remember learning about the United Empire Loyalists (UEL), the Battle of 1812, and the Underground Railroad as a youngster in school. As a Canadian I was proud of the role my country played in bettering the lives of American people seeking a different way of life.

When looking for someone who fit the prompt FAMILY LEGEND I decided to write about Sergeant Jacob Buchner who acted as a guide for the British Army during the War of 1812.

The events that took place during that time definitely fit the prompt for me because there is a FAMILY connection to the larger than life story passed down (definition of LEGEND).

Jacob Buchner
BIRTH 31 MAY 1763 • Hardwick Twp., Sussex, New Jersey, USA
DEATH 11 AUG 1841 • Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Ontario

Jacob was married to:
Catherine Shular
(alternative spellings include: Shelar, Sheelar, Schulyer)
BIRTH 20 SEP 1767 • Sussex County, New Jersey
DEATH 8 FEB 1855 • Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Ontario

Jacob & Catherine are my husband's 4th AND 5th great grandparents via two different family lines.

Jacob's parents were:
Johannes Theis (John) Buchner
BIRTH 18 SEP 1729 • Unnau, Westerwald, Hessen, Germany
DEATH 11 SEP 1791 • Hardwick Twp, Sussex, New Jersey, USA
and
Catharine
BIRTH ABT. 1730 • Germany
DEATH UNKNOWN • Sussex, Sussex, New Jersey, United States
*** Catherine's maiden name may have been Mueller, but I have not yet finished a reasonable exhaustive search to confirm the surname. ***

~

Jacob's father John's UEL status has been proven. I haven't found proof that Jacob's has been proven. He did receive land grants as a Loyalist noting his father was a Loyalist, and Jacob was in his own right.

It had been many years since I learned about the United Empire Loyalists so I decided I should research them.

This has been an added side benefit of 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks - my desire to know more about the life & times of the people who make up our Bramble Bush. Every time I choose an ancestor to feature the ensuing research is informative.

This time was no exception. I discovered:
"...
It was pressure from the UEL's that led to the Canada Act of 1791. They wanted to ensure that they had free title to their lands - the freehold system of land tenure ..."
1

I was wondering why it was that this obscure fact resonated with me while I was researching. I perseverated on it so much that I missed quite a bit of other information that was more relevant to our Bramble Bush folks' story. Then I realized it's because we are currently looking at real estate listings, and the first thing we check is if the property is FREEHOLD or LEASE.

It is 100% true that we view through our own lens. The information we process first goes through a series of checks. What we currently have going on in our personal lives effects how we perceive the information we process.

I wonder how many times I have skimmed over information about our ancestors, and missed the entire point that was being made. This was never more clearly observed than in today's fixation on the establishment of freehold while I missed so much more important information about the achievements on the United Empire Loyalists.

With that in mind I think it's time to look back at X5 & X6 great grandmother Catherine to ensure her story can be told.

Looking back over previous research with fresh eyes!

This is why I search -

Cause ...

You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family you know!

When Two Lines Become One ~ Clarissa (nee Buchner) Rittenour

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 11 (LUCK)

When I made my first tree on Ancestry in 2013 I didn't use the best research techniques. I hadn't yet taken a genealogy course so didn't have any idea what a reasonably exhaustive search meant. I began adding people willy nilly to my tree without any regard to whether the facts fit. The only thing I looked for was the same name. I had no idea that there was anything wrong with my tree.

Then one day I realized that I had one set of parents with 40 children. I knew that many of the families back then were pretty prolific,  Did they really name 4 of their children John?  Was it a nickname?  Did the older one die, and the younger given the same name?  Nope - I had added the same John 4 times. I had also done the exact same thing with his 9 siblings.

I then began looking at my tree with a closer attention to detail. I had children born after their parents died. I had children married to their parents & grandparents. I had multiple marriages for the same person. I had the same child with both their birth name and nickname, and sometimes multiple nicknames. Things were a real mess.

The only excuse I might be able to use is that I was recovering from surgery when I made that tree. I had purchased an all access membership to assist with my 6 week recovery time thinking that I would be too obsessed to want to leave my resting position for the entire 6 weeks. It was the first time I had paid for access for genealogy research. No one had warned me this would be my gateway. I really was like a kid in a candy store - racing from one shaky green leaf to the next. I had thought Ancestry wouldn't give me hints that didn't actually fit. It was a rude awakening when I discovered those 40 children for one couple many weeks after my successful recovery and return to work.

I tried to fix the errors, but in the end it became too much and I started over after deleting my tree.  Although I still ended up with some errors there were a lot less once I began carefully considering details before adding a new person.

It was several years later that I was working on my father-in-law's maternal side of the family tree when the shaky green leaf presented Clarissa Buchner married to George W Rittenour. Clarissa & George are my husband's 4th great grandparents via his father' maternal line. My father-in-law's paternal line is Buchner, and LUCKILY I listened to my instincts that the name Clarissa Buchner was familiar to me.

A quick search of my tree in a second search tab, and voila I found that Clarissa's parents were my husband's 4th great grandparents via his father's paternal line, and Clarissa with husband George was already in my tree.

This was the first time that I discovered a relative already in the tree was connected via a different family line. Since then I have found several on my mother's maternal line.

The lucky discovery is outlined below:

My husband's:
4th great grandparents via his father' paternal line
&
5th great grandparents via his father's maternal line
are:

Jacob Buchner
BIRTH 31 MAY 1763 • Hardwick Twp., Sussex, New Jersey, USA
DEATH 11 AUG 1841 • Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Ontario
and

Catherine Shelar (Shuler) (Schuler)
BIRTH 20 SEP 1767 • Sussex County, New Jersey

DEATH 8 FEB 1855 • Woodhouse, Norfolk County, Ontario

His two  lines descend through siblings (bold, underline & italics below)

3rd great grandparents

Jacob Clasnor Buchner
BIRTH 20 APR 1803 • Woodhouse Twp, Norfolk County , Ontario, Canada
DEATH 29 JUN 1886 • Houghton Twp, Norfolk County , Ontario, Canada
&
Amy Catherine Matthews
BIRTH ABT 1801 • Woodhouse, Ontario
DEATH 10 MAR 1880 • Cultus, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada

4th great grandparents
Clarissa Buchner
BIRTH 1815 • Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada
DEATH 1898 • Wheeler Twp, Michigan, USA
&
George W Rittenour
BIRTH 1801 • Ohio, USA
DEATH 6 OCT 1874 • Ontario, Canada

My husband's 4th great grandmother via his father's maternal line, and his 4th great aunt via his father's paternal line!

In our BRAMBLE BUSH FAMILY TREE on Ancestry I use a DNA symbol as the profile photo of the confirmed through a descendant match.

This line resulted in the creation of a new symbol (combining the two DNA strands normally used to track each line into one photo).

Father's paternal and maternal line

When two lines become one the potential relatives reduce greatly, but DNA matching becomes a bit more complicated!
