This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.

Catherine Cameron Power ~ Seeking the Source of Power

  52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 8 (POWER)

This is my 3rd year with the 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks Challenge. The first year I focused almost entirely on my side of the Bramble Bush. The second year I followed a plan to alternate fairly on all sides of the Bramble Bush. This year I decided to wing it. So far all of the 2021 blogs have been about my husband's side of the Bramble Bush.  This week is no different.

My husband's great grandmother on his mother's maternal line was:
Catherine Cameron Power
BIRTH 5 JUL 1888 • Tain, Rosshire, Scotland
DEATH 5 MAY 1978 • Simcoe, Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada

I have been unable to find much about great grandmother Catherine Power before her 1911 arrival in Canada.

She married widower:
Thircul Murney Aspden
BIRTH 4 APR 1883 • Houghton Tp, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada
DEATH 25 APR 1963 • Courtland, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada

Who had one child:
Doris Elizabeth (Dottie) Aspden
BIRTH 26 AUG 1908 • Simcoe, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada
DEATH 6 JAN 1998 • Simcoe, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada

With his first wife:
Tenneta May (Nettie) Yeager
BIRTH 25 MAR 1892 • Woodhouse Tp., Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada
DEATH 24 DEC 1908 • Woodhouse Tp., Norfolk, Ontario, Canada

Thircul & Catherine had 7 children.
My husband's maternal grandmother was their 5th.

Andrew John Ross (Ross) Aspden
BIRTH 25 MAR 1914 • Norfolk, Ontario, Canada
DEATH 11 MAY 1991 • Courtland, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada

Thomas Grant (Tom) Aspden, SGT
BIRTH 17 MAR 1916 • Woodhouse Twp., Norfolk, Ontario, Canada
DEATH 30 AUG 1993 • Eden, Elgin, Ontario, Canada

Margaret Jane (Marg) Aspden
BIRTH 20 JUL 1918 • Haldimand County, Ontario, Canada
DEATH 11 MAY 1997 • Simcoe, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada

Clara Rebekah (Cy) (pronounced Kai) Aspden
BIRTH 22 JUL 1920 • Haldimand County, Ontario, Canada
DEATH 27 NOV 1991 • Port Rowan, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada

Eva Alice Aspden
BIRTH 4 SEP 1922 • Simcoe, Norfolk Co., Ontario, Canada
DEATH 23 AUG 2008 • Penticton, British Columbia, Canada

Catherine Cameron (Kate) Aspden
BIRTH 27 JUL 1924 • Woodhouse Twp., Norfolk, Ontario, Canada
DEATH 28 JUL 2003 • Simcoe, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada

Thircul Murney (Murney) Aspden
BIRTH 25 NOV 1926
DEATH 1 MAR 2011 • Tillsonburg, Oxford Co., Ontario, Canada

Catherine departed Glasgow, Scotland on August 19th 1911 traveling on Allan Shiplines, Grampian. When I first found the record it appeared as though she was traveling alone, and I wondered how it was that she decided to go to Canada.

Canadian Passenger Arrival List

It was only when I found the outgoing record that things got clearer.

UK, Outward Passenger List

It appears as though Catherine came to Canada as a domestic.
She was part of the Buchanans Party.
She traveled in the ship's steerage accommodations.
She arrived on August 26th 1911.
She was headed to Toronto, Ontario, Canada according to the ship's manifest.
How she met widowed Thircul is not a part of the story I have heard.

Catherine's usual residence on the marriage registration below is Simcoe.
Some of the passengers she traveled with were headed to Simcoe - she may have too.
Thircul's first marriage & first child's birth happened in Simcoe.

How they met we don't know, but they w
ere married July 1st 1912.

Thuircul & Catherine (nee Power) Aspden Marriage Registration

Thircul Murney & Catherine Cameron (nee Power) Aspden

I have been unable to find any records of Catherine before she was on the ship heading to Canada. I haven't found any information about the Buchanans Party. The only record I have found of her parent's names are from her marriage registration.

While searching for more information about Catherine's arrival as a domestic in Canada I found a full digital copy of Marilyn Barber's Immigrant Domestic Servants in Canada which I have included a link in the sources below. It is a very enlightening read for anyone with an immigrant ancestor who arrived as a domestic. There is also a section the British Home Children. It will interest folks who like learning about the people who formed Canada, and their way of life.

If you have details or hints to assist please add them in the comments section below or email me. I would love to connect!

February 23rd 2021 ***Edited to update how Thircul and Catherine met:

"Grandma travelled from Scotland with her friend Maggie Christie. She went to work on a farm. One day she was singing in the kitchen & Grandpa happened by and heard her. He said right then he was going to marry that girl with the beautiful voice. That’s how the story goes. I just found an old letter from Aunty Gladys" Source: my husband's aunt

Mary Christie seems to have been known as Maggie
- this record backs the letter details!

When the story is backed by records!!!

R. Robert Mutrie ~ A Credible Source

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 7 (UNUSUAL SOURCE)

In the years I have been searching for broken branches of our Bramble Bush there has been a few unusual sources, but the majority of my searching has been through very traditional sources.

In 2018 I attended a Genealogy Conference, and struck a jackpot find on the freebie table. There were Ontario Archives public record books that included my husband's 4th great grandfather in it. You can read about that find here:  |Jacob Buchner ~ A FRESH START in Canada

One of my early sources for the Buchner family line was
"R. Robert Mutrie, Norfolk County researcher, writer and publisher of more than four decades, is quite simply, "Mr. Long Point Settler.".
 "
1

Mr. Mutrie's writings and documentation has helped build our Bramble Bush. His information can be counted on to be accurate. I have read many of his writings, and quoted him as a source in many of my blog entries. Mr. Mutrie is a credible source.

This week's UNUSUAL SOURCE is that we recently found an Ancestry DNA match to a person who I suspect is Mr. Mutrie's wife. My husband shares 21 cM across 3 segments (Unweighted shared DNA: 34 cM, Longest segment: 19 cM) with her. The Predicted relationship is 4th–6th Cousin. My husband does not match Mr. Mutrie himself. His match is to an account managed by Mr. Mutrie hence I suspect his wife.

What makes this UNUSUAL is that it appears as though my husband is related on all 4 sides of his lineage. This unusual discovery was made when looking at the shared matches. This unusual discovery resulted in the creation of a new DNA profile picture:

The DNA match is small. The value of the match is in the shared matches. As I have found many times in searching my husband's side of the Bramble Bush the lines intersect so often that it makes it very hard to determine the exact relationship.

The best part about this unusual discovery is knowing the research that has gone into our Bramble Bush is correct. R. Robert Mutrie is a credible source in the Ontario Genealogy community. Our Bramble Bush matches the tree I found on Ancestry. It is a great feeling when credible sources confirm your research.

When your family has such long roots to the area that all 4 sides of your lineage are interconnected!

Valentine Schram ~ Born February 21st 1757

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 6 (VALENTINE)

I will introduce you to my husband's 7th great grandparents on his father's mother's side of the Bramble Bush.

Johan Wilhelm (John) Schram
BIRTH 22 JUL 1717 • West Camp, Ulster, New York, United States
DEATH JAN 1785 • New York, USA
&
Anna Catherine (Catharina) Lehman
BIRTH 12 FEB 1720 • Loonenburg, Greene, New York, United States
DEATH 1784 • Athens, Greene, New York, United States

I was super excited to find John's Will. Their 10 living children were listed along with married names for their daughters.

New York Wills, Calendar of Wills, page 369

Today I focus on their 3rd son (my husband's 6th great uncle):

Veldte Schram
BIRTH 21 FEB 1757 • Loonenburg (now Athens), Greene County, New York, USA
DEATH 20 MAR 1846 • Louth Township, Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada

Born 1 week after Valentine's day Veldte was known as VALENTINE. as recorded on the marriage registry to:

Hannah Bowman
BIRTH 14 APR 1760 • Canajoharie, Montgomery, New York Colony, Colonial America
DEATH 1864 • Halton, Ontario, Canada

The other 9 living children referenced to John & Catharina were:  Frederick, Petrus/Peter, Johannis/John, Jeremiah, Annaeje, Geertruy, Mariah/Maria, Clement.

I was intrigued that the son born one week after Valentine's Day (Febraury 21st 1757) would become known as Valentine. I hadn't realized that Valentine's Day has been celebrated as long as it has.

If you want to learn more about the history of Valentine's Day see the sources below.

There is no guarantee that the reasons lie with this special day, but I would like to believe they do.

When Kitchen is a Family Name ~ Emma Tiffney (nee Aspden) Kitchen

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 5 (IN THE KITCHEN)

In considering this week's prompt IN THE KITCHEN I immediately thought about the family name Kitchen in one of my husband's maternal lines. I really tried to write about the various cookbooks and recipes handed down that would fit better for the prompt, but I just couldn't get the idea of the last name Kitchen being this week's blog.

When I first found the Kitchen line in our Bramble Bush I realized I had never heard of Kitchen being a last name before. I pondered how it became a last name.

On my initial search I found some reference to the name being a shortened version of Kitchener (a town in Ontario), and a few other hypothesis. I decided to check with a reliable source.

"English and Scottish: from Middle English kychene ‘kitchen’,
hence an occupational name for someone who worked in or
was in
charge of the kitchen of a monastery or great house.
Scottish and
northern Irish: variant of McCutcheon.
Source: Dictionary of American Family Names ©2013, Oxford University Press

I found a few areas in our Bramble Bush with the Kitchen family name.
This week I will focus on:

Harold Kitchen
BIRTH 17 JUL 1875 • Ontario, Canada
DEATH 18 MAY 1931 • Simcoe, Norfolk Co., Ontario

Son of:
David Kitchen
BIRTH 2 JAN 1847 • Ontario, Canada
DEATH 2 SEP 1910 • Waterford, Ontario, Canada
and
Elizabeth Honey
BIRTH 20 MAY 1850 • Townsend Township, Ontario, Canada
DEATH 30 AUG 1919 • Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Harold Kitchen married:
Emma Tiffney (Tiffney) Aspden
BIRTH 20 NOV 1878 • Canboro, Haldimand Co., Ontario, Canada
DEATH 18 JUN 1939 • Brantford, Ontario, Canada

Oakland Cemetery -  Brant County, Ontario, Canada

Tiffney was the daughter of:
Jonathan Aspden
BIRTH 20 NOV 1847 • Brooksbottom, Walmersley, Bury, Lancashire, England
DEATH 26 SEP 1904 • Tay Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada
and
Sarah Melissa Robins
BIRTH 12 JAN 1854 • Canboro, Haldimand County, Canada West
DEATH 28 JUL 1888 • Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada

Jonathan's parents were:
John Aspden
BIRTH 20 AUG 1819 • Brooks Bottoms, Bury, Lancashire, England
DEATH 7 MAR 1906 • Houghton Township, Norfolk County, Canada
and
Martha Wolfenden
BIRTH 10 OCT 1819 • Rochdale, Lancashire, England
DEATH 21 OCT 1888 • Houghton Township, Norfolk County, Canada

John & Martha were Tiffney (nee Aspden) Kitchen's grandparents, and my husbands X3 great grandparents).

My husband and Tiffney are 1st cousins X3 removed.

"The Kitchen family name was found in the USA, the UK, Canada,
and Scotland between 1840 and 1920. The most Kitchen families
were found in the UK in 1891. In 1911 there were 401
Kitchen families living in Ontario. This was about 71% of
all the recorded Kitchen's in Canada.
Ontario had the highest population of Kitchen families in 1911."
1

The Kitchen family I featured here were in Ontario, Canada in 1911.  The quote above would include my husband's distant cousin's family.

Taking the people off the pages, and bringing them forward to tell their tale!
