This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.

Curses and Thieves ~ The Mehargs

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2024: Week 41 (MOST)

I wonder what the most popular baby names in the 1800s were?

    - This was my immediate thought as soon as I began thinking about this week's prompt MOST.

There was no shortage of data available online where I discovered John & Mary were the most popular throughout the 1800s.

Then I began searching our Bramble Bush for a couple whose names were John & Mary who fit for the timeframe.

I found Chris' X3 great grandparents (via his father's paternal line).

John Franklin Meharg
Birth 24 JUN 1832 • Rathfriland, Ulster, County Down, Ireland
Death 7 JUN 1909 • Norfolk, Haldimand-Norfolk Regional Municipality, Ontario, Canada
&
Mary Ette (Marietta) Longstaff
Birth 22 MAY 1840 • Scarborough, York Co, Upper Canada (Ontario)
Death 4 MAR 1917 • North Walsingham, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada

Rosa Lula is Chris' X2 great grandmother

The information I found online kept quoting 1880

the most popular name during the late 1800s, John hit its peak in 1880 with 9,655 baby boys given the name that year. It remained one of the top 10 boys’ names for a century, and ranked 28th in 2016.
...
Nearly six percent of all baby girls born during the 1880s and 1890s decades were named Mary, making it the most popular female name in the late 19th century. A whopping 14,406 baby girls were given the name in the year 1898 alone. By comparison, there were only 5,773 baby girls given the second most popular name, Anna, that year.
 " 1

I couldn't figure out why until I found the Galbi Think! page (linked in sources below) then I realized the 1880 date was the census date the information was collected from.

When Mary was born in 1840 there were 3233 with the second most popular, Elizabeth, there was only 1828.

When John was born in 1840 there were 2351 with the second most popular, William, there was 1804.

These statistics were from the United States. Likely Canada (Mary) and Ireland (John) were not much different.

According to the United States Social Security the top 10 most popular baby names of the 1800s were:

Sourced below

Mary & John had 11 children that I have found records for. Chris has DNA matches through 4 of the children. I suspect I have not found all of their children because these 11 all lived to adulthood. It's always possible Mary & John defied all the odds of the time & didn't lose any infants or children, but this would be very surprising. Their youngest is Chris' X2 great grandmother on his father's paternal line.

Their 11 children I have found are:

Nicholas James Meharg
Birth 3 AUG 1860 • Glen Meyer, Ontario, Canada
Death 14 OCT 1941 • Detroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA

William Edgerton (Bill) Meharg
Birth 02 FEB 1862 • Glen Meyer, Ontario, Canada
Death 14 APR 1919 • Alpena, Alpena, Michigan, USA

Alfred Edward Meharg
Birth 14 JAN 1864 • Glen Meyer, Ontario, Canada
Death 2 MAY 1945 • Dunbar, Marinette, Wisconsin, USA

Sarah Lavina (Sally) Meharg
Birth 31 MAR 1866 • Glen Meyer, Ontario, Canada
Death 18 JULY 1934 • St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada

John Franklin (Jack) Meharg
Birth 22 AUG 1868 • Glen Meyer, Ontario, Canada
Death 21 JULY 1949 • York, Ontario, Canada

David Ernest Meharg
Birth 9 MAY 1871 • Glen Meyer, Ontario, Canada
Death 19 JUN 1919 • Comber, Ontario, Canada

Joseph Wesley (Joe) Meharg
Birth 08 AUG 1873 • Glen Meyer,  Ontario, Canada
Death 18 NOV 1930 • Alpena, Alpena, Michigan, USA

Robert George Meharg
Birth 18 AUG 1875 • Glen Meyer, Ontario, Canada
Death 23 FEB 1954 • Glen Meyer, Ontario, Canada

Charles Clarence (Charlie) Meharg
Birth 22 JAN 1878 • Glen Meyer, Ontario, Canada
Death 02 AUG 1949 • Yale, St Clair, Michigan, United States

Whitfield Thomas Meharg
Birth 23 JAN 1880 • Glen Meyer, Ontario, Canada
Death 4 APR 1958 • Tillsonburg, Oxford, Ontario, Canada

Rosa Lulu Meharg
Birth 12 JUL 1882 • Glen Meyer, Ontario, Canada
Death 23 DEC 1962 • Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada

This was the line that first gave us to wonder if the two sides of our children' Bramble Bush were going to colide.

The tale was the Mehargs were Grahams who reversed the spelling of their name after being sheep thieves and deciding to live a crime free life.

I was relieved to find their Grahams were Irish since my mother's paternal line is Graham from Scotland.

Then I found the article, Meharg, a name cursed since the 1500s; blame it on the Archbishop of Glasgow, written by Howard Meharg that tells us this

"My distant and unknown relative, Bob, has discovered that our family hails from a blood-soaked region along the border of Scotland and England he describes as once being in the "grip of feud and organized gangsterism." Trust me, Bob says, this was bad stuff. And it was made that way, largely, by a bunch of murderous clans known as the "border reivers," whose only major contribution to English culture was the word "blackmail."

These "goons" (Bob's word) thought nothing of sacking and looting a farm or neighboring clan. Now, right in the thick of all of this were our ancestors, who at that time went under the name of Graham.

The Grahams, he says in a bit of understatement, were so good at their business that they brought a "certain amount of ill will." Thus, they were savagely persecuted by the English king of the day.

But that was just the beginning of the Grahams' problems. The Archbishop of Glasgow issued a tirade which, in part, went like this: "I curse thair heid and all the haris of thair heid; I curse thair face, thair ene, thair mouth, thair crag, thair schulderis, thair breist, thair hert..."

Only a Scot could come up with something like that. But it worked. It became so unhealthy to be a Graham that many of them, at the behest of one smart family member, decided to change the name to avoid further attention. In a blaze of inspiration, he put the letters backwards, from Graham to Maharg and later to Meharg.

Then, in an equally bright move, a branch of the family ran off to the peace and safety of Northern Ireland." 2

It's interesting that this family lore is similar to the family lore my husband's branch tells, but not so close that it's the exact same tale.

Now we are left wondering if the two sides of this Bramble Bush really are merging ...

Sorry kids you may be cousins to yourself!!!

James Lee ~ American Revolution Soldier

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2023: Week 41 (TRAVEL)

When looking at records for family members it's often hard to figure out the how & whys of their travel without looking at the big picture.

A perfect example of this is my husband's paternal 5th great grandparents:
James Lee
BIRTH 11 DEC 1757 • Littlay, Buchamshire, England, UK
DEATH 1804 • Saltfleet Tsp, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada
and
Anna Hannah Margretha (Hannah) Corman
BIRTH 1760 • Fredrick, Maryland, USA
DEATH 31 JAN 1828 • Saltfleet Township, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada

How exactly did James & Hannah meet when he traveled from England to Canada, and she from the United States to Canada.

It makes a bit more sense when considering their son (Chris' 4th great grandfather) Samuel was born in Fredrick, Maryland, USA.

Even more sense when the 1782 Maryland, USA marriage entry for James & Hanna was found.

6th great grandparents William & Ann (nee Walker) Lee never left England. The records for James' siblings do not indicate anyone besides James left England.

Further searching to write this blog it appears that James came over as a soldier to fight in the Revolutionary War.

That still doesn't explain how they met, although there is a good chance it was via Hannah's brother Isaac - but that is a tale for another time!

6th great grandparents John & Sarah (nee Harrison) Corman were married in Fredrick, Maryland, USA in 1758, and all their children were born there. John was from the Netherlands. I haven't tracked Sarah's family back further than Virginia, USA.

Both John & Sarah died in Ontario, Canada.

Exactly how 5th great grandfather traveled to Fredrick where he met his wife Hannah is a mystery. Their first 3 children were born in Fredrick, Maryland, USA, all following children - were born in Ontario.

In 1792 James & Hannah Lee obtained a land settlement - Lots 21 & 22, Concession 4, Saltfleet Township, Wentworth Co., Ontario, Canada.

I was delighted to find this information about 5th great grandpa while searching online.

"Who Was James Lee?

James Lee was a British Soldier who served under General Cornwallis during the American Revolution. He married Hannah Corman and they settled down in Maryland after the war and lived there until 1792.

The British Government at that time awarded 200 acres of land in Canada to all disbanded soldiers. James and Hannah immigrated to Upper Canada and settled on lots 21 and 22, Concession 4 in Saltfleet Township. The family consisted of five sons and three daughters. The Lee family has been outstanding in various activities and played a leading role in the political affairs of Saltfleet Township from its early beginnings.

Their name is also connected with the war of 1812. A story  is told that John Lee, a son of James, fought by the side of  Sir Isaac Brock at the battle of Queenston Heights in October of 1812. When Brock was wounded John Lee helped to carry him off the battlefield and later he was a pallbearer at his funeral. The Lee family has also been connected with the Battle of Stoney Creek." 1

We don't have a photo of James in his uniform, but history (and shows on TV) tells us he would have looked very close to the photo below.

James' profile on WikiTree says that his last battle was on October 19th 1781 at the surrender of Yorktown portrayed in the photo below.

James & Hannah are said to be buried on their homestead property.
Exactly where is unknown due to the loss of the stone markers.
It appears as though the original homestead is still held by the family.

4th great grandfather, James & Hannah's son, arrived in Canada at age 6
William Samuel (Samuel) Lee
BIRTH 25 AUG 1786 • Frederick, Frederick, Maryland, USA
DEATH 22 AUG 1848 • Saltfleet, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada

Family History Books ~ Handed Down

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2022: Week 41 (PASSED DOWN)

My favourite genealogy hand-me-down is the book I received from a newly found cousin.

The book is called OUR COURAGEOUS PIONEERS:  History of Gronlid and Surrounding Districts of Argus, Athol, Edenbridge, Freedom, Maryville, Murphy Creek, Sandhill Creek, Taelman, Taras, Teddington. It's written by Gronlid and District Historical Society .

This family history book was gifted to me
from a newly found cousin
The first time I got a look at this book was via an interlibrary loan. I had the book in my possession for 2 weeks. It was just enough time to decide I really needed to own this book. There was no copies available from any traditional source. It was many years before I would be able to call a copy my own. All because a new cousin gifted it to me.

I then realized I have been gifted quite a few family history books.

This family history book was gifted to me
from a newly found cousin on 23&Me

This family history book was gifted to me
from my grandmother's brother's daughter-in-law

This family history book was gifted to me
from a cousin on a family Facebook page

This family history book was gifted to me
from my husband's grandfather

This family history book was gifted to me
from my husband's grandmother

If any of these family history books have anything of interest to you - reach out via comment below, and I will share.

Updated DNA Results ~ Valhalla Awaits

I am a fan of change. I know there are folks who don't like change. They prefer to have things stay the same. I am not one of those people. I feel that change is good. It's healthy to change things up every now & then.

It wasn't too long after we moved in together that my husband discovered I like to change furniture around - a lot! Over the almost 30 years we have been together he has been a willing participant.

Recently we attempted to change things in our living room and dining room only to discover that the current configuration is all that works with the current furniture. We only discovered this by attempting to shuffle everything before moving it all back to exactly where it started.

If we are going to change things up we will have to purchase all new furniture. We aren't quite ready to do that so for now things stay the same.

Recently I got an email from Ancestry DNA letting me that my DNA story had been updated.

When I opened Ancestry DNA I discovered my husband's had as well.

The changes weren't dramatic, BUT as you can see we now have more Viking in our DNA results - VALHALLA AWAITS!!!

My first results (or maybe they were also an updated result:

The lack of Irish in my first DNA results had me wondering about what became the Lake/Cannon mystery (My great grandmother Nellie May Cannon's paternity).

My results before the newest update:

The 4% Irish that appeared in the update above (and remains below) wouldn't have resulted in my questioning what eventually became what looks like a NPE (non parental event).

My updated results:

My husband's results before the update:

Even less changes in my husband's, but as you can see his previous minimal Viking (2%) has now increased to 6%

In looking at the changes in the DNA results I wondered why the results changed when the DNA didn't change. The explanation from Ancestry

"AncestryDNA® ethnicity estimates now provide even greater precision.
DNA science is always improving, and we're proud to announce our latest ethnicity estimate update. We've added new regions in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas in our most precise ethnicity estimates yet." 1

That makes sense.

Taking delight in the discoveries!

Fishing For Cousins ~ When The Bait Works

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks: 2020 Week 41 (NEWEST)

If you are a regular reader of my blog you may remember  Week 16 (AIR) Cousin Fred ~ Too Tall to be a Pilot where I wrote about my grandmother's cousin Fred Baker.

By the end of that blog there were more questions than answers about Cousin Fred. Most of those questions were answered when I received an email from Cousin Fred's son.

Blogging as Cousin Bait worked again!

When I first began my genealogy blog I hoped that cousins who make up this Bramble Bush would find an entry about a relative of theirs, and message me. I had hoped they might type their relatives name into a search bar, and find my blog. When I received the email below it was clear that blogging as Cousin Bait really works.

Read on to see the results of this fantastic catch.

*****some details redacted for the privacy of the living*****

Hello Deb, I guess you could say I am "Cousin ***" since Cousin Fred was my father. I had your email sent to me from my cousin ****** ***** who got it from his sister **** ******.

I read the blog (http://somehowrelated.blogspot.com/2020/04/cousin-fred-too-tall-to-be-pilot.html and thought I might be able to fill in some blanks you were mentioning and asking about.

As you have probably already guessed from this email, yes, my Dad did marry before going overseas. He married Jean Anderson Moorcroft. You'll find attached a copy of a newspaper announcement for their wedding as well as a picture of them on their wedding day which was September 11, 1943.

You mentioned you were curious about Dad's size. He was 6'4" tall and probably weighed around 220 pounds when he was in the service. You find attached a picture of him flying a Harvard Trainer aircraft. You can tell it's him because his head just fits under the canopy.

I also attached a picture of him with some of the men he served with, and I'll let you guess which one he is, lol.

Dad and Mom had 2 sons when he returned from overseas, *** who was born in **** and myself who was born in ****.

After leaving the service Dad gave up his pilot's license at my Mom's request.

He worked as an aircraft mechanic for TCA which later became Air Canada. They lived in Winnipeg until 1964 when they moved to Toronto and Dad became the international Service Manager for a company called Grip Clinch. They sold pneumatic air tackers which were made in Germany. Dad travelled over there a few times and learned to speak rudimentary German.

In June of 1975 Dad retired to a very Small town about 140 miles North of Toronto. Mom and Dad lived the remainder of their lives in Kearney and I think it was the best part of their lives together.

Mom died of ALS in 1988 and Dad died of Cancer in 2002. My brother also died in Kearney in 2001. They are all buried in the local cemetery there.

I have also attached a picture of Dad in his 70s beside his Honda Gold Wing.
He said it was the closest thing he could find to flying.

I hope this helps a little. If there is anything else you may have a question about, I would be more than pleased to try and help.

All the best,
"Cousin" ***.

Genealogy researching is more than collecting names in files.

It's breathing life into the people who came before.

It's seeing who they were.

It's realizing how their dna matches yours.

It's about the roots and branches of your family.
