This is my space to share my quest to collect as many broken branches as I can in my fractured family tree which resembles a bramble bush more then a proper tree. As I go forward in this blogging journey I hope to share how I have searched far & wide for family - with no regard for where they come from or if I should really want them.
You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family you know!

This Family's Historic Event ~ Arrival In Canada

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2025: Week 12 (HISTORIC EVENT)

1850, at age 30, Martha (nee Wolfenden) Aspden got on a ship with 4 children (Joseph age 6, Rachael age 4, Jonothan age 2, John infant), traveling from Liverpool England going to Canada.

They had a stop at Ellis Island September 18th 1850.

It was this record I  found confirming their trip from England to Canada.

We know they traveled via ship to Canada because infant John died at sea somewhere between New York & Montreal.

I haven't found that ship's manifest yet.

I have not found the record for husband John's arrival.

I have found  them together in Canada for the 1951 census in Norfolk County, Canada West (Ontario), Canada.

Left buried in England were three babies: Alice, George, and Ann

Martha was pregnant while she traveled by ship from England with her small children.

What a trip that must have been for her.

Traveling alone with small children & pregnant while going to a new country.

The 1951 census also revealed John was an Engineer, and the family  belonged to the Methodist Church.

Chris' 3rd great grandparents: John & Martha (nee Wolfenden) Aspden.

I don't know what caused this family to leave England for Canada.
I don't know when X3 great grandfather John arrived.
What we do know is without that journey Chris and I would never have met, and our children never born.

A historic event for this family was the arrival in Canada of Chris' 3rd great grandparents!!!

This is why I search -

When Kitchen is a Family Name ~ Emma Tiffney (nee Aspden) Kitchen

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 5 (IN THE KITCHEN)

In considering this week's prompt IN THE KITCHEN I immediately thought about the family name Kitchen in one of my husband's maternal lines. I really tried to write about the various cookbooks and recipes handed down that would fit better for the prompt, but I just couldn't get the idea of the last name Kitchen being this week's blog.

When I first found the Kitchen line in our Bramble Bush I realized I had never heard of Kitchen being a last name before. I pondered how it became a last name.

On my initial search I found some reference to the name being a shortened version of Kitchener (a town in Ontario), and a few other hypothesis. I decided to check with a reliable source.

"English and Scottish: from Middle English kychene ‘kitchen’,
hence an occupational name for someone who worked in or
was in
charge of the kitchen of a monastery or great house.
Scottish and
northern Irish: variant of McCutcheon.

I found a few areas in our Bramble Bush with the Kitchen family name.
This week I will focus on:

Harold Kitchen
BIRTH 17 JUL 1875 • Ontario, Canada
DEATH 18 MAY 1931 • Simcoe, Norfolk Co., Ontario

Son of:
David Kitchen
BIRTH 2 JAN 1847 • Ontario, Canada
DEATH 2 SEP 1910 • Waterford, Ontario, Canada
and
Elizabeth Honey
BIRTH 20 MAY 1850 • Townsend Township, Ontario, Canada
DEATH 30 AUG 1919 • Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Harold Kitchen married:
Emma Tiffney (Tiffney) Aspden
BIRTH 20 NOV 1878 • Canboro, Haldimand Co., Ontario, Canada
DEATH 18 JUN 1939 • Brantford, Ontario, Canada

Oakland Cemetery -  Brant County, Ontario, Canada

Tiffney was the daughter of:
Jonathan Aspden
BIRTH 20 NOV 1847 • Brooksbottom, Walmersley, Bury, Lancashire, England
DEATH 26 SEP 1904 • Tay Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada
and
Sarah Melissa Robins
BIRTH 12 JAN 1854 • Canboro, Haldimand County, Canada West
DEATH 28 JUL 1888 • Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada

Jonathan's parents were:
John Aspden
BIRTH 20 AUG 1819 • Brooks Bottoms, Bury, Lancashire, England
DEATH 7 MAR 1906 • Houghton Township, Norfolk County, Canada
and
Martha Wolfenden
BIRTH 10 OCT 1819 • Rochdale, Lancashire, England
DEATH 21 OCT 1888 • Houghton Township, Norfolk County, Canada

John & Martha were Tiffney (nee Aspden) Kitchen's grandparents, and my husbands X3 great grandparents).

My husband and Tiffney are 1st cousins X3 removed.

"The Kitchen family name was found in the USA, the UK, Canada,
and Scotland between 1840 and 1920. The most Kitchen families
were found in the UK in 1891. In 1911 there were 401
Kitchen families living in Ontario. This was about 71% of
all the recorded Kitchen's in Canada.
Ontario had the highest population of Kitchen families in 1911."

The Kitchen family I featured here were in Ontario, Canada in 1911.  The quote above would include my husband's distant cousin's family.

Taking the people off the pages, and bringing them forward to tell their tale!
