The Great Migration of Canada ~ This Bramble Bush

   52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 14 (GREAT)

When I thought about GREAT I immediately thought about the great grandparents that make up this Bramble Bush. 

In searching for the biggest great I started clicking through the top of our lines. I discovered I am only up to about 5th or 6th greats on most of our lines.

 When I first started searching I hit several brick walls. By adding extended family I was able to break through those early brick walls. I decided then that I would not race to the top. I would make sure I added as many family connections as I could before going higher. 

It seems I need to refocus on going higher before going any wider. 

In pondering what else I wanted to write about I stumbled upon THE GREAT MIGRATION OF CANADA, 1815-1850. 

I was intrigued to learn that over 400,000 British citizens left their homes to move to Canada.

What an adventure that must have been. They bravely set off for a land they knew nothing about. After many days at sea they traveled across a new land in search of their new home. 

Their journey resulted in this family calling itself CANADIAN. Their courage and hopes resulted in this Bramble Bush being rooted solidly in Canada.

What a gift I was given by these early immigrants who braved all to come to Canada. 

Each had a story that I do not know, but wish I could have asked before it was too late. 

I was intrigued by a group of Bayes siblings who immigrated to Canada within THE GREAT MIGRATION timeline.

Samuel & Elizabeth had 10 children.  Their children were aged 8 months to 16 when Samuel died.

7 of their children immigrated to Canada: Rosemond, John Christmas, Mary, Ann, Samuel,  Solomon, James (Joseph). One stayed in England: Elizabeth. Two I have not been able to confirm yet: Rebecca & Celia.  

Rebecca and her husband (James Hewitt) appear to have stayed in England, but their daughter was married in Canada when she was 22.

In looking at the movement from England to Canada it's clear the family members moved at different times. I haven't yet found the arrival dates for most of them.  They all ended up in the same general area. Some were married in England before coming to Canada, and some married in Canada. It appears as though not all of the members of this family immigrated to Canada, but a reasonably exhaustive search hasn't yet happened to make this conclusion. 

There are more branches of this Bramble Bush who arrived from Britain during THE GREAT MIGRATION OF CANADA.

This one family is on my maternal grandmother's paternal side.

Solomon Bayes is my 4th great grandfather. He was 26 years old when he married 18 year old Mary in Canada. Mary was also born in England. I have not found the date of her arrival in Canada, but she immigrated with her parents and the majority of her siblings.

I will always be grateful that I was born into a world where I was safe & free. Their efforts were not squandered by those who came after them.

Following the Notes ~ Down the Rabbit Hole

  52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 13 (MUSIC)

This week's blog is late. 

Not late according to the 52Ancestors challenge, but definitely late on my own schedule. 

I found myself  'down the rabbit hole' this week. 

The more I clicked, the more intrigued I became. 

I finally decided that I just had to write & post when I realized I will never know it all.

Lets start at the beginning!

Like so many who grew up during the 70s and 80s I loved the Beach Boys. I sang their songs while trying to dance along with them. I imagined myself at the beach: surfing, singing, and dancing!

What amazing music they shared with us.

Brian, Dennis & Carl Wilson are my 10th cousins via their mom's (and my mom's) family line. I am not related to their cousin Mike Love who was also a founding member. He is their cousin via the Wilson line.

When I discovered a musical connection to my family line I was surprised.

I can't carry a tune. 

That has never stopped me from singing. 

My favourite part of commuting includes being a ROCK STAR. I dance and sing with all I have while driving down the freeway. It's a challenge to cover all the parts, but I manage to be my own backup singer too. 

I have been trying to learn to play the ukulele for the past 4 or so years. After all of the practice and online learning I can tune my ukeleles (yes I have 2) like a demon! Actually playing them (or any other instrument) is beyond me.

Anyone who has heard me sing would be shocked to find out that I lead parents & tots in song as a Parent-Child Mother Goose Teacher.

I sincerely hope the takeaway for the parents I lead is that having fun is more important that carrying a tune. 

My husband plays piano.

He took Royal Conservatory lessons as a child, and is still pretty good. 

He tried to teach me, but it appears as though I have two left feet while trying to play the piano. My husband lost patience with me. He just couldn't understand why my left feet were making an appearance at the piano! 

He taught both of our boys to read music, and to play piano. Both boys have musical talent. Neither of their feet made appearances during their lessons.

They appear to have good hemispheric communication allowing both their hands to do different things at the same time. I have realized that I do not have this skill. 

Neither of our boys have taken any professional lessons, and both play a few instruments.

Our youngest taught himself to play violin using only the internet when he was about 8. 

I always thought their talent was inherited from their dad's side of this Bramble Bush.

After finding this musical family line I'm not so sure.

The Beach Boys parents were both musical.

There is a possibility their mom's talent and skill descends down the same line as I descend from.

As I continued to research I discovered that I am related to:

The reason this blog is late is because I was trying to fit all of the famous musicians into my tree before finishing this blog. Realizing this was not possible I decided to wrap things up!

I had found some very intriguing stories about the musicians attached to this Bramble Bush. I wanted to incorporate some of those stories into this blog. I realized that there are piles of books, articles and websites dedicated to sharing their stories. 

Those stories were shared after careful research. 

The couple of weeks I was dedicating to this research didn't even begin to scratch the surface.

Remembering ~ Ronald Clare Buchner

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 12 (LOSS)

Our children are in their early 20s. They have 2 great grandparents still alive. They only have one grandparent. Both my husband and I come from families that live to 100 - until they don't. My mom passed away in 2015 (age 65), his mom passed away in 2019 (67), and last month  his dad passed away at the age of 74.
 

My husband was 3 when his parents divorced, and his mother moved them across the country. Over the years they spent some time together. After the age of 3 there was little consistent day to day contact.

Nature VS Nurture. 
The first time I met my father-in-law I noticed they smelled the same.
It was strange to realize this stranger had the same pheromones as the man I had been close to for 6 years.
They share mannerisms.
Their voice was so similar it was hard for me to pick out which one was talking.
Child development says birth to age 3 is where the foundations are built so maybe it's a combination of genetics and nurture.

Father & Son

During a visit when our youngest was about 11 I walked behind grandfather & grandson.
They were walking side by side down the hall.
Their pace was the same.
Their cadence was the same.
Their shoulder positioning the same.
Their body structure the same.
Nature VS Nurture.

Grief is complicated.
My husband lost the only dad he ever had.
Both his parents have died.
He is now an orphan.

Remembrance (nee Luce) Merry ~ Martha's Vineyard

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 11 (FORTUNE)

6 days without Internet made this week's blog planning a bit difficult.
I thought that I had at least one person in our tree named (or known as) LUCKY. 

Once our internet provider finally showed up to reconnect the wires that had been pulled down by a tall truck on our street I was ready to start searching who to feature.

Seems my memory is not what it used to be. 

Using the TREE SEARCH function in our Bramble Bush I typed LUC, and the direction of this post completely changed as I began to giggle. 

Then again, maybe I am the only one who found this week's PLOT TWIST amusing. 
Which is okay because I mostly write for ME!

As soon as I typed LUC my 9th great grandmother raised her hand to have her story told.

Then again - maybe she was mocking me which is why I giggled

Mispronouncing LUCE as LUCKY and noting the irony of my MEMORY not being what it was....

There is a lot of information about the family available due to the family connections in Martha's Vineyard.

Which brings us back to the prompt of FORTUNE.

I never knew of my family's connection to a town I have never visited, but I did know about the wealth or FURTUNE associated with it.

Same Name ~ Father & Daughter

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 10 (NAME'S THE SAME)

Yesterday my grandfather would have turned 91. 
He died 10 years ago at the age of 81. 

John Robert (Jack) (Jacky) Graham
BIRTH 7 MAR 1930 • Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
DEATH 5 AUG 2011 • Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

I never knew him.
He left the family before I was born.

He briefly returned to walk my mom down the aisle for her marriage to my dad.

No one from his first family knew of his death until several years after he had died. 

I have written several posts about grandpa Jack which left me pondering if I should write about him again.

I decided YES!

This is my genealogy blog, and I get to decide the rules. 

To be honest it's really my mom that I am missing. 

It's just a few days until the 6 year anniversary of her death.

Her father's birthday reminder from Family Search last week left me thinking about my mom. 

Memory is a funny thing. 

I can almost hear her say she loves me to the moon and back again.

I can almost smell her perfume.

I kept a bottle of her signature scent while emptying her house for sale after her death. In the 6 years since I have only once taken that bottle out to spend a moment of time with my mom. I do have to make the decision carefully because I am allergic to mom's favourite perfume.
The sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes usually stop within the hour! 

I can almost feel her touch:

Top to bottom: Mom, Me, my youngest brother
The special blanket my mom's sister made her

It's been 6 years since mom died, and I miss her everyday.
I still start to pick up the phone to tell her about something that happened before I remember she can't answer my call. 

This year will be my 7th Mother's Day without mom.

I know it's still 2 months away, but I can still feel how painful that first Mother's Day without mom was. In the years since it hasn't gotten any easier. When I was emptying mom's house about a month before that first Mother's Day I found the card I had sent her the previous year. Inside the card she had written "I LOVE THIS CARD" in capital letters. She never told me that she loved the card I had sent her on what would be her last Mother's Day. I am grateful for the message she left behind. 

I don't think I will ever stop missing her. 

Mom was named after her father.
She is her father's oldest child. 

Jack's first family (missing 2 sons yet to be born)

Her father was John Robert Graham. He was known as Jacky as a child, and Jack as an adult. My mom was named after her father: Jacki-Roberta Graham.

It seems this topic is an annual event in my genealogy blog.

I wrote about mom and her father 1 year ago. 

It's important to look back every now and again for new ideas and hints!

Virtual Conference ~ Relatives at RootsTech

 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks 2021: Week 9 (MULTIPLES)

This past weekend I attended the virtual ROOTSTECH CONFERENCE. I have never been able to attend in the past, but this year's virtual conference made it so easy. I didn't have to travel, and I didn't have to take time off work. I never thought there would be a positive to be found in a worldwide pandemic.  Being able to attend the RootsTech Conference is definitely a positive side of the Covid-19 Pandemic. 

Don't get me wrong - I would love to travel. 

My husband and I had a trip planned to New York September 2020. It was canceled. We had big plans. We were going to attend the 911 Memorial. We were going to Ellis Island to find the documents for my husband's ancestor. Our hotel was right in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. He looked forward to the Hot Dogs, and I the Bagels -- ooohhhh the food.

Canceled!!! 

We now have ginormous travel vouchers we may never get to use. 

I dream of the day we will hear those magic words "This is your captain speaking". 

Until then I am grateful for the small wins like an amazing free virtual genealogy conference.

This year's Roots Tech Conference had a cool feature I signed up for -
RELATIVES AT ROOTSTECH

My first thought was WOW --- that is a lot of relatives at this conference.

These relatives of mine are all over the world as shown on the maps below.

When I started to look more carefully at the matches I discovered the closest is 4th cousin X2 removed, and they are as distant as 11th cousins. The search function breaks down maternal and paternal lines. On my paternal side I had 11 matches. All 11 were on my father's maternal line. My biggest brick wall is my father's paternal line, and not one match was via that line. None of the matches that I looked at helped me break down any of my brick walls. 

I realized that the multiple matches on my mother's maternal line was because I hadn't added enough to my other lines on the Family Search site. I spend some time over the weekend doing that. Sadly it didn't break down any walls. One of my matches was connected through the NPE (Non paternal event) that I have in my tree. It was only with Ancestry DNA that it became clear my great grandmother was not the biological daughter of her mother's husband. 

It was only when I realized all of my matches are attending the virtual RootsTech conference that everything made sense. The reason my brick walls are solidly intact is because I haven't yet found the people who know or the sources with the facts. The connected relatives are only through the Family Search Family Trees. 

My father's paternal grandparents immigrated from Ukraine to Canada in 1909. I have no solid information from before they departed the port of Bremen. Not one of my connections were from that area.

Multiple sources sharing the same information doesn't provide any new information. 

It's only when I find the right sources that the brick walls will come down!
